THE PARIS REVOLUTIONARIES. [Newspaper Article] — Western Herald — 18 January 1888

THE PAEIS REVOLUTIONARIES. The Revolutionists are beginning to move (says the Paris correspondent of the Standard), though there exist considerable hesitation and divisions amongst them. At a meeting held in the Salle Favie, a Belleville citizen, Roche, advised the 3000 Communists and Anarchists present not to work theui . selves up into a fever, for they had no arms, and a single battallion of soldiers would suffice to sweep them all away. At the same meeting, however, the ex-Coniinunlst General Eudes encouraged the working classes to take the tools of their trades, and not to wait for orders from any central or other committee, but to descend into the streets on. the first announcement of the dis solution of the Chamber, which lie considered would be favourable to the Monarchists. He conjured the meeting not to desert Paris for Versailles on the day of the Congress, but to go on that day to the Hotel de Ville, and 'do there what you like.' The imagin ations of the Revolutionists w...

lx one of liis recent speeches , the Premier announced that the Government had agreed as to the advisability o£ introducing a system of light railways to act as feeders to the main trunk lines. This plan is by no means a irev. one, having been discussed freely in Parliament and the press, and of late years gaining ground iu public opinion. Tlie exjjeriences of other countries is to a great extent responsible for the increasing popularity of light lines here and though other Governments have expressed ap parently favorable opinions it should be the canse of considerable satisfaction that the pjesent Ministry has decided to embody the idea in its policy. The peculiar conditions of Ne\\r South Wales render some such scheme as this highly desirable. With a large area and scattered population the difficulties of transit .ind intercommunication are natur ally very great, so great indeed that many an enterprise which would pay with better and cheaper transit now remains unde veloped.
