For Latino fans, Sosa puts the 'Home' in home run [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1998

For Latino fans, Sosa puts the 'Home' in home run By Ken Ellingwood Los Angeles Times SAN DIEGO - From a press box perch at Qualcomm Stadium, Tijuana sportswriter Rafael Gonzalez Martinez pondered the continuing twists in Sammy Sosa's remarkable duel with Mark McGwire for the single season home run record. Despite McGwire's 63rd home run on Tuesday, which put him on top once again, Gonzalez knows how his countrymen south of the border want the tale of these dueling "jonroneros" to turn out. "Mexico hopes Sosa does it because he's Latino," said Gonzalez, who covers sports for the respected weekly newspaper Zeta. "He reflects well on Latin people." Though a world away from Sosa's homeland in the Dominican Republic, the border with Mexico is proving an auspicious place for the Chicago Cubs slugger to turn up this week during one of the final legs of the frenzied race. Interest in Sosa is cresting among California Latinos and in sports-crazy Tijuana, where Sosa T-shirts are show...

Records show CIA funded Tibetan Program, Dalai Lama in ' 60s [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1998

Records show CIA funded Tibetan Program, Dalai Lama in ' 60s By Jim Mann Los Angeles Times WASHINGTON - For much of the 1960s, the CIA provided the Tibetan exile movement with $1.7 million a year for operations against China, including an annual subsidy of $180,000 for the Dalai Lama, according to newly released U.S. intelligence documents. The money for the Tibetans and the Dalai Lama was part of the CIA's worldwide effort during the early years of the Cold War to undermine Communist governments, particularly in the Soviet Union and China. In fact, the U.S. government commit tee that approved the Tibetan operations also authorized the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. The documents, published last month by the State Department, illustrate the historical background of the situation in Tibet today, in which China continues to accuse the Dalai Lama of being an agent of foreign forces seeking to separate Tibet from China. The CIA's program encompassed support of Tibetan ...

3 more newspapers call for Clinton to quit; others defer decision [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1998

3 more newspapers call for Clinton to quit; others defer decision By Rita Ciolli Newsday Three dozen newspapers had already called for President Clinton's resignation but Monday, one of the largest, USA Today, and two other influential voices, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, raised the volume by adding their names to the list. "Bill Clinton should resign now," said an editorial in USA Today, which has a national circulation of 2.1 million. In contrast, in an editorial headlined: "City to Bubba: Hang in there," the New York Daily News told Clinton to "finish the job you were hired for." The Miami Herald condemmed Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr. "This was and is a political lynching," said the paper. But are such editorials just adding to the noise about a story the public is telling pollsters it wants to go away? Or are they a warning of riptides for the White House? "After a weekend like this people are looking for all sorts of barometers t...

Study finds 'Gulf War Syndrome' symptoms in soldiers who weren't there [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1998

Study finds 'Gulf War Syndrome' symptoms in soldiers who weren't there By David Brown The Washington Post The physical complaints known as "Gulf War syndrome" are not only common among Gulf War veterans, they're also frequently reported by soldiers who never went to Iraq, Kuwait or Saudi Arabia, according to new research. The fatigue, moodiness, memory problems and musculoskeletal pain many Gulf War veterans complain of are not likely to be explained by toxic exposures, exotic infections or other "risk factors" peculiar to the war, a team of epidemiologists report in Tuesday's Journal of the American Medical Association. Epidemiologists from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta surveyed four Air Force units in 1995 and found that 45 percent of Gulf War veterans had chronic physical complaints. However, about 15 percent of soldiers who had never been deployed to the Gulf had the same problems, the researchers found. Further, people reporting...

Take a gamble on Rounders [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1998

Take a gamble on Rounders By Jon Stubbs features editor From Miramax films comes the Ted Demme and Joel Stillerman production Rounders, the story of master poker player Mike McDermott. The film opens with McDermott, a law student, losing $ 15,000 to the Russian poker virtuoso Teddy KGB (John Malkovich). McDermott vows to quit the game forever, and with his girlfriend and fellow law student by his side, is reduced to making local deliveries to convenience stores. However, when his best friend, Worm (Edward Norton) is released from jail and confesses to McDermott that he owes a large gambling debt that is gaining considerable interest, he is forced back into the game. This, of course, causes tension with both his girlfriend and his studies. Academy Award winner Matt Damon, who plays Mike McDermott, says "The film is kind of a celebration of who you are. I'm portraying a guy who's meant to be at the highest level of the game. The character I play should be a poker player. This ...

Sho'Nuff exhibits unique style [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1998

Sho'Nuff exhibits unique style By Dakota Dinnen staff writer Until August 28 of this year, at Behrend's 50th Anniversary party, I ladn't ever heard the music of Sho'Nuff. Being from Pittsburgh, which is the city this band calls home, [ had heard of them and was interested n finally checking them out at the jarty. Sho'Nuff's name led me to a stereotypical conclusion that they must jlay hip hop or rhythm and blues tiusic. Quickly I learned that this as: iumption was unfounded because Sho'Nuff can easily be marked an 'alternative" band and, depending on ivho you ask, a rock'n roll band. The ead singer and guitarist (Gene Walker), drummer (Jason Grew), jassist (Cliff Foster), and guitarist Corey Congilio) intrigued me though [ couldn't decipher some of their lyres. After the band had finished, my :uriosity afforded me ten dollars to buy Sho Nuff s album, The Sho Must Go On. Since Sho'Nuff isn't yet known on the national music scene, I decided to compare their album with some oth...

A "real" war movie [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1998

A "real" war movie By Michael Coursey staff writer One of the most anticipated releases of this summer was Saving Private Ryan. This latest project by director Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks shows the gritty realism of war as it illustrates the D-Day invasion. The film was shot from the perspective of a small platoon of ordinary Americans, who were soldiers in the U.S. Army. This movie shows the unpleasant, if not grotesque human tolls that weapons and bombs took upon the soldiers on both sides of the conflict. The movie stars Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns and Matt Qamon. Tom Hanks plays a conscripted Army Captain whose only wish is to make it back home to be with his wife. His character is [leroic but believable at the same time. Tom Hanks is the leader of the platoon, but also is his men's confidant who only pulls rank when he had to. Edward Burns does an outstanding job, but Tom Sizemore's character, the salty Army Staff Sergeant, is extremely impressive. One ca...

Get to know the SPC [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1998

Get to know the SPC By Valerie Trost staff writer _ Last Saturday the Student Programming Council made about thirty people hysterical at Bruno's when they welcomed Philadelphia comedian Chris Coccia. His stand-up act included all the goods campus students find amusing from drugs and sex to student parking and fake identification cards. Christian Darling, 01, French, commented , "I couldn't breathe at some points." The rest of the audience also seemed to be having trouble with the oxygen intake at moments. After the performance I had the privilege of investigating a question that I (and others) were pondering: Who is responsible for this entertainment and how are these people brought to our school? The answer is simple but the process and planning involved is not. The Behrend SPC is responsible for coordinating, promoting, and organizing functions such as last Saturday's comedian. Rob Ring, 03, business administration, gave an explanation of what actually transpires in this g...

Against Oberlin on Saturday, "We got off to a slow start, but we finished strong," said Assistant Coach Melissa Eging. Tuesday again saw the women finishing strong in a physical 2 2 draw We dominated in the second half and overtime, but just couldn't find the net for the win Assistant Coach Melissa liuinii against Keuka. New playing fields almost complete [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1998

New playing fields almost complete By Shannon Weber staff writer The new intramural fields west of the Erie hall parking lot will finally be available to the students. They were started in May of 1997 and due to a dry spell were not completed in the spring of 1998 as expected. The playing fields are anticipated to be in use for the spring of 1999. The use of the new playing fields will be open to all students. The main reason for the construction of the new fields was space. The fields the students use now are not big enough. The new fields will allow more flexibility to the students, coaches and physical education in structors. The physical education golf classes will be provided with a new golf putting range and new driving green. There are a few minor changes to the range and driving green. There are plans to put in a new waterline to allow water fountains to the new fields. Lights are being set up for the new fields. This will allow coaches to set up later practices for ...
