Insurance Department . [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 14 January 1898
Insurance Department . It is the aim in this department to discus * matters pertaining to mmtual insurance . Communications are invited . To Reduce Fire Losses . We are quite certain that onr mutual companies have not heretofore given sufficient attention to the Important question of how to reduce losses by fire . The stock companies confine their attention to securing the premium and paying losses ; the mutual companies have naturally followed their example . Both classes of companies have paid some attention to the reduction of fire losses , but neither bave paid the attention that the subject deserves . The mutual companies are in a position to reduce these losses to a very great extent and to their own profit Of course , there are some men who will find fault If they are assessed each year for the cost of conducting the business and there are no assessments for fires . This , however , is a very shallow view of the business . If the company in wMch our property Is insured could ...

To Grind or Not to Grind . [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 14 January 1898
To Grind or Not to Grind . To WAIXAOTS * rasHHU Mr . Geo . S . Angus , Kossuth connty , Iowa , writes : I wish yon would publish an article giving your views and also the conclusions of the experiment stations concerning the value of grinding corn for young steers . Will it pay to grind shelled corn worth eighteen cents per bushel at a cost of three cents per bushel , when one has hogs following the steers ? The steers are one year old and over . Does It pay to grind corn and cob for young steers , and if so , Is It necessary to grind fine ? Am feeding oats once a day ; should they be ground ? Oats are worth 17 cents ; when ground twenty cents . This is an annually recurring question . That grinding feed renders it more digestible and In better condition for practical feeding is an ( indisputable question . That it 1 s always profitable to grind , however , Is a proposition that can not be accepted as applicable to aH seasons and conditions that arise on the farm . There Is always a...

Hearts and Homes . This department Is oonductod by Mr * . Heunr Wallaoe , De * Moines , Iowa , who invite * eootributtons from all of its readers . ^^^ Association - Everything In life obeys the rule of association . Our government , our colleges and schools , and associations make the world better . We need to be mutual helpers in every good cause , therefore , I again urge the association of farmers wives , also of the daughters of twelve years or older in the Daughters of Ceres . It is a society for Improvement , recreation and free discussion on educational and other topics that will be helpful and make ns happier and better . The social side of our natures needs cultivation and a good laugh or amusing story gives cheerful views of everything , and the world looks bright and sunny . Drummond says , The oil of joy is very cheap ; and if you can help the poor on with a garment of praise , it will be better for them than blankets . Horticulture [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 14 January 1898
Horticulture Cetnmnnieation * to this department are soli sited . Questions on hortfoultural matter * will be cheerfully answered , To Drfva Rabbits Away . If there is a preventive for keeping rabbits from knawing the bark of fruit trees that has not been published in this Department during the past six weeks we have yet to hear of it . We think the ground has been pretty thoroughly covered , and the reader who permits his trees to be barked hereafter can certainly be Charged with not living up to Ms opportunities . Prof . L . P . Baily , however , gives a method of keeping rabbits away from the orchard that has not yet been mentioned . It Is to dip rags in sulphur and then tie them to sticks and stick them np in different parts of the orchard . This is worth trying . An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure . Hybrid Gooseberries . Bulletin 36 issued by the Iowa Experiment Station contains the report of the work being done by Prof . Budd In crossing gooseberries . He began in...
