A MODERN FARM HOUSE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

A MODERN FARM HOUSE . The accompanying cut and floor plans are of the very attractive farm house of I , . E . Greengo , Glenville , Minn ., built during the past summer by Sawyer & Westrum of the same place . It will be noticed that the rooms are sufficiently large to accommodate a good sized family and all are abundantly lighted . The large bed room on the first floor and the four on the second in the main part furnish ample sleeping apartments for the family and the regular hired help , while the half story room , 14 x 20 , over the kitchen , makes convenient sleeping quarters for threshing crews or extra help . It will be noticed that the back kitchen door is located very close to the stairway door that leads to the hired help s room over the kitchen . The sink , cistern pump and hard water pipe that is fed from the large tank in the yard are located to the right of the back kitchen door , making it convenient for the men folks to wash when they come in from work . An...

THE SCIENCE OF COOKERY . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

THE SCIENCE OF COOKERY . IV . What Shall We Drink . Water is the universal beverage—we all drink more or less of it—some less , and it might be better for all of us if we drank more of it . It is the foundation of all other beverages , so we will first see what part it plays in the body—considering it as pure water merely and not in relation to any mineral or salt it may contain . First : It furnishes the blood and lymph a fluid medium by which food may be carried over the body and waste matter removed . Second : It serves as a distributor of the body heat . Third : By absorption and evaporation ( the perspiration ) it regulates the body heat . Fourth : By keeping the membranes soft it prevents friction and the uncomfortable sensations occasioned by their drying . ( This is noticed in the mouth especially ) . , Fifth : It dilutes the fluids of the body and keeps them in the proper state for use . Were it not for water all our food would be tasteless , for , to be able to taste anyth...

fflea / fL ^ c / tlofetf Suggestions . A child has a right to a robust body , whether he is at the head or foot of his class in school . The skin of some babies will not bear flannel , in this case a linen or fine muslin shirt should be put on first , and the wool over it . Ginger bread made from oatmeal instead of flour is a good aperient for children . There is nothing more distressing to little children than earache . The pain can be promptly relieved by putting a little black pepper on a small piece of absorbent cotton . Draw up the cotton around the pepper , dip it into warm oil and insert this in the ear . Massaging with cold cream will materially aid in removing the lines between the eyes , caused by frowning . Apples eaten plentifully aid digestion and clear the skin . Grapes are said to be the healthiest of all fruits . Oranges and lemons , which act as a tonic , have the reputation of curinc some forms of dyspepsia . Many of the sore throats and colds in the head come from...
