Our Sub-And District . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 4 January 1902

Our Sub-And District . IWETWEEN the foothills of the Kocky m mountains and the Missouri river , here and there extending its eastern border over the Big Muddy , lies an immense area popularly known as the subacid district . Possessing a soil of phenomenal richness it remains practically unoccupied . Several successive waves of settlement have invaded these fertile plains only to rebound when drouth asserted itself . Undoubtedly the normal precipitation of this section during the ¦ growing months is insufficient to produce abundant crops when methods adapted to more humid climates are used . Irrigation by storing water in the Rocky mountains is . proposed , but the project is by many regarded as chimerical . Once the grazing Grounds of countless herds of buffalo , overstocking of the ranges has well nigh killed the luxuriant native grasses and the f utilre of the sub-arid district is at present a matter of conjecture . Agricultural scientists are discovering , hpwever , that while pe...

Wisdom by President McFadden . WHAT W . M . McFadden , of West Liberty , la ., President of the Iowa Improved Live Stock Breeders Association told that body at the annual meetingbeld recently at Jefferson , Ia , Is worthy of attention in the memory . Calling attention to changing conditions Mr . McFadden emphasized the fact that cheap land had goce never to return and that easy conditions prevailed when cheap land permitted wanton waste of fertility had likewise departed . Mr . McFadden rigorously scored the wanton waste practiced by corn belt farmers aiid declared that wholesale farming was responsible for much of it , planters overworking themselves to get in a large acreage of one or two special crops only to be unequal to the task of properly cultivating thorn . He urged thc necessity of smaller and better cultivated grain fields and larger areas of pasture adding that : Thc farmer with grass going to waste is invariably the most successful . Mr . Late Ltterary ffotes . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 4 January 1902

Late Ltterary ffotes . Are England , scotianu anu ireiana aestmeu , ultimately , to become a part of The United States of America and Great Britain ? is the startling inquiry which William T . Stead makes In the January COSMOPOLITAN . He has been one of the propheta of Great Britain , and has , at all tinies , been able to see in advance of hia contemporaries—as events have proven . He haa been studying tbe new conditlona brought about by the industrial combinations , aud reaches the conclusion that England and the United States are destined to be more closely united , and that aa aoon as the English people wake up to the absurdity aud general uselessnes * , as has been shown in the Boer War , of -a king and aristocracy , tbe trend will be immediate in the direction of a union with the people of the United States . However much one may differ from Mr . Stead , his speculations will be found vastly interesting . He is the first British subject who haa had the courage to suggest such ...
