[ AGRICULTURAL 1 SCIENCE 1 [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 12 January 1907
[ AGRICULTURAL 1 SCIENCE 1 NOTES ON OHIO RURAL SCHOOLS . Under our free public school system the intent was that all should have equal advantages , that the child of the poor man who pays no taxes be given equal advantages with the child of the wealthy tax payer . That those who occupy advantageous ground should set the pace that those situated less favorably should follow , and by law seek to compel them to follow , is wrong unless those who are more favorably situated are willing to extend help by which his less favored brother may keep up . This the last legislature did not do , hence we have boards of education , which in some sections , very much handicap the provisions of the laws of our state . It is quite a different proposition to secure the necessary funds with which to inaugurate reforms and take advanced ground where every square foot of land is under cultivation , where land is valued for taxation from | 50 to $ 60 per acre , and where the people are exceptionally prosp...

1 THE DAIRY 1 [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 12 January 1907
1 THE DAIRY 1 STARTING A DAIRY HERD . I was long ago convinced that liio i . ily satisfactory way of getting a herd of good cows is to raise them . With the resolution to put that plan into operation there was a desire to know the best methods of raising calves , as the calf may be considered the mother of the future cow , and upon its rearing there hangs much of the story of profit or loss , success or failure in the dairy business , whether ones dairy enterprise consists of only one cow or of a hundred . I have never yet seen a good cow that was a mean calf ; on the contrary , it is common to see neglected , scouring , half-starved calves develop (?) into the scrubbiest kind of cows , the kind that is pulling the average of Uncle Sams herd down to the losing yield of 130 pounds of butter fat per year . Pages might be written upon the importance of giving the heifer calf a proper start and keeping her thriving until she is a cow . I like to have a cow freshen in the fall or early w...
SILOS . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 12 January 1907
SILOS . I want to build a silo for 10 cows , to feed 9 months of the year . What size should it be ? How much lumber will it take ? — F . T ., Cambridge Springs , Pa . To feed ten cows nine months you will need a 100-ton silo , for while you will only actually want seven tons of silage for each cow , you will have to build larger than 70 tons , to allow for the settling , unless you have the facilities for twice filling , and but few care to have a second bite at silo filling the same fall ; so silos are usually built a fourth larger than the actual needs of the dairy . It is a pretty hard thing to estimate the cost of a silo to be built next year , as lumber is about the liveliest thing in the market . except Standard Oil stock . Good silo material has doubled in price here in less than two years , so that now one is hearing . as never before , of concrete blocks for the silo walls , and if I were you I would go to Forrestville , Chautauqua Co ., N . Y ., and see the famous Haserot...

QUESTIONS ANSWERED . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 12 January 1907
QUESTIONS ANSWERED . Feed for Cows . —Is there anything better than mill feed for cows during lactation ? How much grain should a cow have when dry , but coming fresh in two months ? Should cows be fed mill feed when on grass , to get best results ? W . L ., Sugar Creek . 0 . —( 1 ) With present high prices of corn , oats , etc ., mill feed is cheaper , and bran or middlings are always good milk-pro-ducers . Some other by-products , as oil meal , gluten , packing-house feeds , etc ., will cheapen the ration very often . The farmer should always do a little figuring , and ascertain whether be should sell his oats , corn , etc ., and buy other concentrates . The cow s ration should consist of about two-fifths concentrates and . three-fifths roughage , when giving milk ; when dry , / l concentrates and % roughage . In either case the ration should be well balanced . ( 2 ) The cow coming fresh in the spring should be kept in good condition or good flesh , but not fat . Peed bran , middl...
