PRIVATE FAMILIES who aim to raise vegetables of the best quality only , need not to be romhlued figs do not grow on thistles , nor that from good seed alone can good vegetables be obtained . Seeds may , indeed , grow freely enough , bnt unless they prove good in every respect , it were better they had not grown at all . Tho seeds offered by us being mainly tho produce of Bloorasdale , raised under our own personal supervision , with tho aid of years of practical experience , we are enabled to speak with entire confidence as to their quality , and of the reasonable probability of satisfactory results . •3 We have but few Novelties to offer . Our experience ( obtained at some cost ) is that out of tho multitude of that class of vegetables advertised for sale , in moat cases tho good are not new , and the new are not good—substantial , staple , well-known sorts are in the main the most reliable . Wto Itoitoe Written for The Western Aural . Old Opinion * andHabita . Some people Mem to have a set of opinions labeled and packed up In some pigeonhole of their brains , and it is the boast of their lives that they have never [ changed them . And as they ate seldom or never disturbed and brought out for an airing , they lie there with the dust of years upon them and give forth a mouldy , ill-smelling odor when , inadvertently , a new opinion jostles them . Says Uncle Zepanlah Hull : — Ton jist git eout with yonr new-fangled notions , my father never bed a ; mowln machine , nor a reaper , nor I haint had none anther , and I ve got along somehow , and allers hed suthin to eat , and close to wear . I dont blleve in newspaper fannin noway . So he digs away on the old farm , cutting his grass with a scythe , threshing his grain with a flail , and believing only in his al manac . Aunt Hnldab , his wife , says she thinks the old ways are the bestr- anyhow they re good enough for me . So s...

THEMARY.2_ - «— •' ———* [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 14 March 1868

THEMARY.2_ - «— • ———* Idle Bees Set at Work . About swarming time , and in very warm weather , bees are often idle because they have no room to work in the hive . Large clusters hang upon the outside of the hive . They fail to swarm , and remain idle for days and weeks . Heat may have driven them out , to prevent the melting down of their combs . If so , give shade and good ventilation , and they will go to work . If they have already filled their hive , and it is of such construction as that you cannot easily give them more space , yon may change it to the stand of a weak swarmplacing the weak swarm on the stand of the strong one . This should be done when the bees are actively at work in the field . Before removing , subdue each hive with tobacco smoke . Large numbers of bees from the populous hive will return to the old stand and reinforce the ; weak one .. The excess of the one will strengthen the other—thus improving the condition of both . They should be watched for an hour o...

THE POULTRY YARD [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 14 March 1868

THE POULTRY YARD Early Chickeni . Early chickens , like early vegetables , bring profitable prices ; hence , any suggestions that will show farmers how to increase their profits in this direction will be of value . Usually , with proper care , a few broods of chickens may be hatched very early , on almost any farm . When a hen wants to set , say any time in January , I give her a moderate number of eggs , and allow her to commence business . The first danger is that the sharp weather of January may chill the eggs , when the hen leaves the nest to search for food . If the hen-house could be kept warm by a stove , it would undoubtedly pay , not only to protect the eggs of sitting hens , but to promote laying among the rest . When the first eggs hatch , give the hen the warmest place you have about your premises—some spot where she and the brood can enjoy the sun when it shines , and where chilling winds do not reach her . The chickens will require a great deal of hovering , and for th...
