FAýflNl ON T NE BEN(N_[AND By Dr. W. X. Suddutb, Billings, Montata How to Select the Homestead. As livestock is a necessary adjunct to' the highest success in farming in the semi-arid belt, a location should be made adjacent to as much free range as possible. Naturally this will take the settler into the more broken section, of the country, where he can find some smooth land on the bench or alon£ some small stream, where small diver sion dams may be put in and flood waters turned out on small bottoms for orchard and garden, thus insuring C comfortable home life, as plenty of domestic and stock water is absolutely essential to success. That Much of the Present Land Surface Will Sink Into the Sea Befdre the Sea Itself Dries Up. W HEN violent shocks like those that have been felt in the last few weeks come to menace some point on our planet, ruin ing cities and spreading desolation over extensive districts, our uneasy minds interrogate science and demand of it the solution of a problem that has been mooted for many centuries. Let a violent earthquake be felt and im mediately powers and states in a burst of spontaneous, instinctive brotherhood feel, as it were, the necessity for com ing closer to each other; dissensions will give place to anxiety over the common peril, and we all worry about this life of ours that is periodically threatened by the instability of that element which we dign...

THROUGH HIS STOMACI' IIIIII illlIIIII- ,,,,.,,,......, . I "To get at a mans heart or his pocket. first get at his stomach." is a proverb that has a place in a number of different languages. It is true today as when it was originally written. Feed him well and he w ill treat you well. Neglect his stomach. mock at his appetite and you are going to see and feel his displeasure. Now, if it be so easy to have peace at home, surely it will pay to study the stomach of the " Lord of Urea tion" and give him his pleasure to satiety. There might be many more happy homes if this simple advise were most widely heeded. but it is never too late to mend matters of this kind. Take an interest in your table good wife; cater to the tastes of your husband. Get the most ap petizing dainties for him. THE LOCO DISEASE Washington, July 22.-The so-cled loco disease of horses, sheep and cat tle has been for many years a source of serious loss to stockman in the west, who have generally attributed it to certain weeds eaten by the stock. Investigations by the United States Department of Agriculture have not only confirmed the suppositions as to the poisonous effect of these plants, but have resulted in the discovery and id ntification of barium as a definite poisonous element in them. Feeding experiments establishing the facts that the plants are responsible for the disease were carried on under field and corral conditions by Dr. C. Dwight Marsh, while the discovery of barium was made in the laboratory by Dr. A. C. Crawford The loco weeds are a class legumi nous plants of which the principle ones are the purple toco weed (Astra galus mollissimus) and the rattleweed (Aragallus lamberti.) One or both of these prevail to a greater extent over an area including all of Montana. Wyoming, No...
