HEW YORK'S POOD SUPPLY. Startling: FIjrares Showing- What a Good Appetite The Metropolis Has. New Yorkers eat, at a low estimate, about 21,000,000 pounds of beef, mutton and veal in a week, say 3,000,000 pounds every day in the year. They eat more In the Fall and Winter of beef, veal and mutton than in the Spring and Summer, but, and particularly in holiday times, poultry fills up the nooks, cracks and crevices and there is not so much room for the more solid foods. About one-third of the beef that New Yorkers get outside of every day is dressed beef, dressed in Chicago, shipped In refrigerator cars and packed in New York in big, iced storehouses. The other two-thirds comprise un dressed beeves, extra steers, primesteers, good steers, fair steers, medium steers, Colorado steers, Texas steers, all with nothing but their hides and hair on. Every- day 2,000 or 3,000 of the beeves, each weighing 700 pounds when it gets dressed, are devoured as porterhouse, sirloin and steak and roast be...

It - ALABAMA M00HSHI1IEE3. Scenes in an Illicit Still-A Child's Pitltul Situation. Tho visit to an illicit still was under an oath characteristic of the mountaineer, which was sacred and binding. It was about two miles in the moun tains, awav from any settlement. The distance wras travelled on the back of a mountain colt. After following a narrow, beaten track through bushes, over rocks, down hill sides, across ravines and through moun tain passes, a point of a precipice was reached. Mv companions pointed to the depths below ami told me to watch a certain spot. A blue curl of smoke arose, which was from the still we were going to visit. Then down the narrow mountain side we rode, guided by the sensible animal. 3 1' a flip of his foot was made, eternity would have been our doom. Soon a point was reached about 200 vards from the still. One of my com Mtnions took from his pocket a whistle, made of a piece of reed, and gave two shrill whistles, which were answered. The animals were tied...
