It was construct ed in 1879 for the execution of James I'eyton, a colored man, conTlcted of the murder of Jacob Day, and sentenc ed to be hung Jane 20, 1879, but on June 18 of that year, his sentence was commuted to imprisonment for life, and he thus escaed the roje prepared for h m. Peter Lewis, indicted for the some offense, was tried at the same time, convicted of man-slaughter and sentenced to the Albany penitentiary for ten years. DECAPITATION DY THE HOPE.
