Life and Love. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 22 September 1860

Life and Love. Life is a garden fair and free, But 'tis love that holds the golden key ; For hand and heart Once held apart, Life's flowers are dashed with storms of sorrow And bloom to-day may he blight to-morrow, So, reckless ever of wind and weather, Let Life and Love be link'd together. Life is a diamond rich and rare, But love is the lustre that danccth there; For hand and heart Once held apart, Life's jewels grow dim in the breath of sorrow, And diamonds to-day may be dust to-morrow. So, reckless ever of wind and weather, Let Life and Love be link'd together. Life has a rich and smiling face, But Love is the dimple that gives it grace; For head and heart Once held apart, Life's brightest beams are blanched with sorrow, And roses to-day may be lillies to-morrow. So, reckless ever of wind and weather, Let Life and Love be Link'd together. Yancey's Speech. The following is an extract from the speech of Mr. Yancey delivered at Memphis, Term., giving some of his reasons for support...

Independent Candidates. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 22 September 1860

Independent Candidates. Imdependant—lf there is another word in the english vocabulary that is misused, abused, perverted and subverted to the extent that this one is, we have never vet seen it. When applied to man its primary signification simply means "not dependent—not relying on others—not controlled by others," and living above the usual assistance rendered by one person to another in the every day affairs of Vife. Strictly speaking no man is independent. This attribute belongs, to God .done. Of late years, this term is employed for the exactly opposite of its original sense— for no man is insane enough to say, that he is independent of his fellows in every aspect of life; and yet; his daily intercourse demonstrates that he only lives upon the kindness and leniency of his fellowmen extended toward him, hourly. When therefore a man announces to the world that he is an "Independent Candidate" for the suffrages of the people, he literally says that he don't need their votes; where...

Presidential Chances. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 22 September 1860

Presidential Chances. After looking over, gleaning, and weighing the late Eastern news in the aggregate, we have come to the deliberate conclusion, that Mr. Breckinridge will be the next person after Mr. Buchanan, to grace the White House. While some local matters have given the Bellites cause to jingle over a few small political achievements —in the main, we are constrained to believe that they all point to the final triumph of the principles put forth in the Democratic National platform at Baltimore. It will be remembered that this new party, though respectable and conservative in all its tendencies, as is the Breckinridge party, is yet in its infancy, and every success is heralded forth to the world in glowing colors as is usual for young and zealous advocates of every cause. We are, therefore, clear in the belief that while it may talk loud, and at times hopefully of its chances, that it yet lacks the ability to cope with the old Democracy—with all the sinews of war—that will ra...
