SATURDAY MORNING, MARCH 9, 1850 Newspaper* In th' Pacific. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 9 March 1850

SATURDAY MORNING, MARCH 9, 1850 Newspaper* In th' Pacific. Wo have at this time in our pfßce the first printing press established on this coast. It is tho more a curiosity when we reflect upon the singularly eventful scenes through which it has been made to do {he bidding of a variety of masters, and while too we contemplate its appearance, which denotes but hnrd usage, not the slow wear of time It may not be uninteresting to our readers to revert to the past history of the Press in the Pacific, possessed, as we are, of information which is in every way reliable respecting its early growth and more recent advancement. Wo have made up from various sources the following comprehensive account of publications in the Pacific Wo nre indebted to tho Honolulu press for ■ portion of this summary : Sandwk ii Isi.wp QaUETTB, published weekly at Honolulu, from |6M to I>:','> S I) Mackintosh, editor For about twelve months the Snndwich Island Mirror appeared monthly in plac...

«nn .lo«r fJoirt ltl4«liti(*-~- nirh. We always believed the destiny of San Joso would be to witness something remarkable placed on tho pages of history on itiown account. It has not up to the present month contributed much to render its name worthy the especial notice of the historian, and though wo have never failed to express our warm admiration for its fertile field*. it« cloudless summer skies, diversified scenery, and so forth, we hnve always felt a less lively appreciation of its intellectual strength and growth which perhaps has been because of its position, so removed from the hustle of life, so out of the sphere of eventful doings, peculiar to the country and age in which wo thrive. Bo this ns it may, we have quietly considered tho progress of affairs in Pueblo do San .lose, and of all its ambitious climbings, its schemes of wraith and reputation, we have been passive observers. It always transpires when an object is unwearyingly pursued, that it is overtaken without much ...

SACRAMENTO AND PLACER INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 9 March 1850

SACRAMENTO AND PLACER INTELLIGENCE. BAtnumrto Citt, Mardk, I, IWO Having occasion the other day to go out of town as far aj the fort, I was forcibly smirk by the beauty of the Immense plain of fertile land to be found on every side of that building. I much question If the richness .iu'l productiveness of this bind can be excelled by any in the world. For most of the purposes of agriculture, the noil in question is admirably adapted ; and if it were not for the drouth in the summer and fall months two crops could be gathered every year. The soil is a rich alluvial — and this same fertile earth extend* down more than twelve feet. This hind is the work of ages ; and every successive year adds to its richness by the washings of the country above it. For grazing purposes, it is very prolific ; and 1 witnessed many mules and cattle luxuriating upon the green verdure which covered its even surface. Not a rock, or stone, or knoll i* seen to mar the fair and placid face of this beautiful gar...
