Some of the greatest individuals in history served as presidents such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and although being the Hardin-Simmons' Student Congress president is far from presiding over an entire nation it is still a huge responsibil- ity that few have the leadership capabili- ties to undertake. Brad Butler the newly elected stu- dent congress president realizes the importance of his position and is dedicat- ed to the task of serving the student body. Page&-jFhe Brand -'February 8? S8&rrJi Letters to the Editor A Response to a Pro-life article In the last edition of The Brand I was intrigued to find a couple of articles dealing with the controversial subject of abortion. While the topic itself has been such a "hot button issue" for some time and thus often seems a bit dull and overbaked in editorials I felt 77k Brand attempted to present a balanced view of both sides. Although it was short I appreciated Ms. Carlisle's interview of an anonymous individual who cspftascs the minority perspective on campus. Unfortunately she could not elaborate the interview because of space constraints. When I read the articles on abortion I wanted to see a third less conservative or moderate position presented with the two articles because personally I hold to a more moderate view. When I write The Brand next week I will present my position. As for now I have a few criticisms that must be voiced for the sake of good editorial writing. Despi...

If you are from West Texas there are two main things that the geography lacks to pro ted you from raving the same incident occur large hills and snow. Now on a rare occasion one can spot a small hill maybe over between North and South First but in general hills are not even an option at this spot on the globe. And as far as snow goes for a Pennsylvania native until there is enough snow to build a life-sized snow person without having to make a run from the front yard to the back- yard to get enough of the white stuff to finish the head there just isn't much to talk about (Don't get me wrong -I'd much rather be wearing shorts in January .than wool sweaters in September!) Just think about how wonder- ful it would be not only to be able to live and be immersed in the culture of the United Kingdom but also to receive a quality education that counts towards a college degree. Normally 125 to 140 students from the seven to eight participating American universities attend each semester. Page 8 The Brand February 8 1996 Prater encourages students to get back to basics By Laura Horne staff writer Ryan Prater back-up quarterback for the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys encouraged students at a Claim The Prize Rally to get back to the basics by reciting his "Christian" version of Dr. Swiss's clas- sic "Green Eggs and Ham." "As a Christian sometimes the hardest thing is to take that step of faith that will allow us to try to say 'God I believe the words of your Bible'" Prater said. He encouraged students to live a life of abundance claiming the prizes of Christ throughout the Bible. Prater mentioned a book that came out a few years ago "Everything I need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" saying that the thrust of the book was that often people need to get back to the basics. For Prater that meant looking back to Dr. Scuss's classic book "Green Eggs and Ham." "If Sam had never tried green eggs and ham he would never have known he liked them. At five years old if I had ...

Multimedia texbooks hit World Wide Web RALEIGH N.C (CPS) -lb John Russ seeing is believing. That's why the North Carolina State University engineering professor says he created a multimedia textbook on tle World Wide Web for Ids students. The CD-ROM textbook which serves as a study aid for students at NC State and 25 other colleges nationwide grew out of Russ own classroom experi- ence in which he noticed how engineering students in large introductory classes had some difficulty getting a grasp on the material. Soon Russ began using computer simulations graphics and animation in class to help illustrate his points. Still for most of the technical material he had to resort to verbal explanations. "One student said to me 'If these are such com- plex topics that you can't draw them on the board how am I supposed to take notes on them?" Russ says. That inspired Russ to develop a CD-ROM text- book which served as a study-aid for not only Russ' students at NC State but students from 25 ot...

February 8 1996 The Brand Page 15 We Are All Ministers Editor's note: The following is a devotional by Hal Haralson a 1957 graduate of Hardin-Simmons. Haralson presented this piece to a joint meeting of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Development of Hardin-Simmons on Nov. 3 1995. Ephesians 4:11-12 (KJV) And he gave some apostles; and some prophets; and some evangelists; and some pastors and teachers. For the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry for the edifying of the Body of Christ. We have long accepted the truth that God "calls" preachers teachers missionaries. . . even college presidents. Paul gives us a basis for this in his "laundry list" of the "called in Ephesians. I suggest for your consideration that we are all called to be ministers. Most of us "ministers" in ways that are less visible less frequently noted than those who min- ister by virtue of their vocation. It is a ministry of "being there" to others. This ministry finds expression in acts of k...
