PAGE 6 - KIDS SUMMER GUIDE - C&S Media Publications - MARCH 22-23, 2006 Get Summer-camp planning know-how By involving your child in the camp-selection process, hell be more likely to enjoy his summer away from home. Summer camp for many is a child- hood rite of passage. Who hasn't shared stories of insect-invaded bunk houses, food fights in the mess hall and crazy camp counselors? Under the best conditions, camp can be a time for exploration, person- al growth and fun. But at its worst, it can be an inter- minable two months for a child who wishes he or she were at home instead. The latter situation usually occurs when a child isn't actively involved in the summer-camp research process. For parents faced with their child's impending summer vacation, camp can seem the ideal situa- tion ... and invest- ment. Working par- ents know their children will be supervised and they won't have to worry about taking time off from work to monitor their chil- dren's activities. Stay-at-home p...

"If the person really needs ? help, they'll ask another adult." Empowering kids is the focus of "The Safe Side," a DVD series created by Walsh and Julie Clark, a former teacher and founder of The Baby Einstein Company. Since different fami- lies have varying sets of rules or opinions, the videos address questions that encourage discus- sion and finding solutions. This debate.can" help arm children with the information they need to face potentially serious situa- tions. "Like most parents, no'hing is more important to me than pro- tecting my kids from harm, and teaching them to be smart and safe in the wake of situations that might arise around them," said Clark. Both Walsh and Clark stress that children must always exercise their right to say no to someone who makes them feel uncomfor...

In the 'Sounds of Silence' Simon and Garfunkel romanticized that "The words of the prophets were written on the subway walls and the tenement halls ..." and most people use the term 'graffiti' when describ- ing the public art form that has emerged as a global problem from the subways of New York City.
