STATION, FARM & GARDEN. CROPS THAT COULD BE INCREASED WITH ADVANTAGE. TOBACCO—SECOND PATER. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven Telegraph — 6 July 1882

:..: STATION, FARM & GARDEN. ';.'... BY OLD COLONIST. CHOPS.-. THAT COULD BE -INCREASED' /;!/,;?:?: .WITH ADVANTAGE. fl ?).-?. Tobacco— Second Pater. ? Toiuqco is; a hearty, strong-growing plant; ind.it requires good soil. A rich loam, not having too much sand, is likely to. give best' icsults. , It will do very woll where there is a somewhat free admixturo of clay, and ? especially so in districts where strong winds prevail, as, being a branching and heavy , pianc, iu requires a somownat nrm noia ot me soil.: The preparation by either spade or 'plough, should be deep, and unless the soil is ? naturally very rich, it will be all the bettor of (manure. For reasons that will appear, it is . necessary to have the land so clean that, even in the event of heavy rain coming upon tho plants at the early stages of growth, they must not bo choked with weeds. This condition in connection with the making of a successful tobacco-crop, is well understood by. tho Chinese, who have taken t...

Agriculture. LAND EXHAUSTION.—No. 2. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven Telegraph — 6 July 1882

Hgrf culture. LAND EXHAUSTION.— No. 2. By E. W. Emeiison MaoIvor, F.I.C., F.O.S., &c. Author of 'The Chemistry of Agriculture.' Thus wo arc enabled to explain tho discordant results obtained by the application of tho same manure to different soils. On some ? soils a manure may produce highly profitable ' results, and on others prove an utter failure. In tho one case tho soils wero deficient in tho constituents or 2)lant-food present in tho manure, while in the other soils no such deficiency existed. We are also enabled to comprehend why tho second and third appli cation of tho samo manure is often without much effect on the yield of produce ; tho land had by tho first dressing become sufficiently rich in tho principle constituent of tho manure, so that further applications were useless as they simply ' added their sum of more to that which had already too much.' When this point has been reached a change of tho manure will generally bo found profitable, as some constituent no...

We notice by the Government Gazette ' that ' tenders will be received up to September 12 for the first section of the Illawarra Railway extending from Mncdonaldtown to near Goal Cliff, a distance of 32 miles and 51 chains. The announcement of the success of the Illawarra Railway vote in the Assembly ?was an item of intelligence of great interest . but the one just referred to is ' of even greater importance. An expenditure of nearly four millions pounds sterling was sauctioned for tho construction of railways during the same session, yet amongst the first, for the construction of which tenders are called, is the Illawarra lino. To the people of Shoalhaven it is of as great intei-est as to those of the northern part of Illawarra, for as surely as now tenders are called for making the railroad towards this district, as surely, ere long, — unless the demon of monopoly and self-interest, which is the incubus on general progress,— damn our cause, the coast railwav must enmn in Tovvis Bay...
