The Commonwealth. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 4 March 1901

The Commonwealth. Mr. Barton, accompanied by Mr. Drake and Mr. O'Connell, Minister of Lands in the Queensland Ministry, and a number of others, left Brisbane on Wednesday morning, and arrived at Gvmnie the same afternoon, where Mr. Barton gave an address. Refer ring to the question of the opposition to the Federal Government, lie said he did not think it would be strong, at least not so far as numbers were con cerned, but it would be led by a leader of great sagacity, and witli very fe« beruples. So tiie Ministry had their work cut out, but the}' were not a bit afraid. As to the fiscal issue, he asked liow tliey could put a duty on any article coming into Australia without it being protective in its inci dence, and asserted that the idea of a freetrade tariff was onlv raised by an aspirant who wanted to get into his (Mr. Barton's) boots. The Steel Trust. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 4 March 1901

The Steel Trust. The steel industry of the United States, which has lately been brought under the control of a trust, of which Mr. Charles D. Schwab was appointed manager at a salary of £1 60,000 (?) a year, has a capital of 1100 million dollars (about £220,000,000). The capital is made up of 300,000,000 , dollars in bonds, 400,000,000 dollars in preference stock, and 400,000,000dol. in common stock. Prior to the formation of the trust a syndicate, formed by Mr. J. P. Morgan, banker of New York, took over the works of the Carnegie Steel Company 1 imited, at Pittsburg, the price paid being £32,000,000. This transaction, it was said, would ensure for the syndicate the control of the steel rail industry, and subse quently Mr. Andrew Carnegie said the trust held the world's steel market at its mercy. The operations of the trust have naturally excited a good deal of atten tion in England, and particularly in Sheffield, the centre of the English steel industry, where comment was especiall...
