Perth Town Trust. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 5 October 1849

Perth Town Trust. THE usual Quarterly Meeting of this Trust was held on Monday last, in the Court House, Mr. H. L. Cole, in the chair. The minutes of the last meeting having been read, the accounts of the past quarter showing a balance in hand of *19 2s. Od., were examined and passed unanimously. The Chairman said that, with regard to the works of the Trust, he had nothing particular to mention ; the gang of priso- ners allowed them by the Government, had been employed in making the neces- sary preparations, such as procuring clay, &c, for the completion of the main street, which line he confidently expected would be finished in about six working weeks. Por the cartage of clay on the line between the residences of Mr. A. Shenton and Mr. Glyde, tenders had been advertised* for, and of those received the lowest in amount was ¿£50, and the committee, consequently, did not feel themselves justified in accept- ing it, believing the work could be done by other means for a much sma...

A German Liberals' Opinion of England. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 12 October 1849

A German Liberals' Opinionof Engr, . . land. IN the AtTienoum we find a review pf a work called " Reminiscences of,my ïâie, by Gustav Eombst,( who plied lately ni Edinburgh. He had been forced to leave Germany, and take refuge in Switzerland ( and France, and latterly came to this c(oun-,' try. His extreme democratic opinions were considerably modified by what he sawJ in Britain, and he states his views in the' following passage : " Tor more than a year past, I have of- ten had in mind, and have told my friend^ by word of mouth and in writing, how I' congratulate myself on the fate that brought me to Great Britain. When I reflect on all that has befallen and influ- enced me during the last seven years, ¡Í1 can hardly wish-as far as my progressive development is concerned-to haye been thrown into a different course of circum- stances. Like the faithful in the bible, I may exclaim, ' All has happened to me for the best.* But it was long before the ac- knowledgment of this could make i...

The name and address of the writer must accompany each com- munication. ' To the, ¡Editor of the "Independent Journal? Sir,-I scarcely know whether the public ought most to be amused or indignant at the pertinacity the Editor of the Inquirer exhibits in weekly recurring to the subject of the Sound mail. I cannot deny that during the winter, great > irregularity has occurred, but certainly ,not more than might reasonably have been expected/or than has happened during previous winters. Had the fierce zeal exhibited on this sub- ject, originated in a desire to serve the co- lony, by forcing the G-overament to take measures for the regular performance of the duty, it would assuredly be deserving of approbation, but; it is so apparent that the real object is to indúcela recurrence to the former expensive system of contracting with Mr. Watson, t...

The Town Footpaths. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 12 October 1849

The Town Footpaths. On Monday last a case was brought be- fore the Magistrates, which we have been requested to notice;1 the charge preferred against, the accused was one which we re- gret to say, occasion: for, is too often given, and;too .seldom made-wilfully damaging the(,tpjwn,;fdotways-J-'so often.done with, impunity that every, townsman appears alike regardless of* what should be matter of concern to $ach member ¡of the commu- nity. In the present instance the damage was/done under pretence of crossing, by driving a team and dray obliquely and not straight across, thereby cutting up, some six pr, eight yardsjn ilength of the path. Although, perhaps ignorance' of the law' couíaj not have been u¿g!ed in extenuation of ltho offence), yetare may as well publish that portion of the act which refers to the subject. By section 20 of 4fch «fe 5th Viet., No. l8., a fine not exceeding £5, over and above the amount of any damage, is impo- sed on all "who shall upon any way used, or appoi...

The Sandwich Islands [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 12 October 1849

The Sandwich Islands* The recent discoveries in California will add much to the commercial importance of the Sandwich Islands, placed as they are in a direet line between San Francisco and China, and admirably adapted to be- come the centre of the commerce of the islands of the northern Pacific. Their connexion with the Australian colonies is also likely to become of greater interest and importance, as there are so many ar- ticles of colonial produce for which a demand is likely to spring up, A few remarks on the present state of these islands, there- fore, will, we are sure, be acceptable to our readers. We seldom receive regular files of the Hawaiian journals, but1 we have now be- fore us a few" numbers of TJie Polynesian, and Sandwich Islands News, extending from the middle of July last to the 18th January, the perusal of which has afforded us both information and amusement. The Polynesian is avowedly the govern- ment organ, it contains all the official no- tices, laws','and'corr...
