WOOL AND STOCK REPORT. STANDARD Office, Hay Wednesday, February 5, 1873. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 5 February 1873

WOOL AND STOCK REPORT. Standard- Office, Hay, Wednesday, February 5, 1873. Hot weather prevails here with the days more agreeable than the nights — the nights are generally sultry and hot. The mosquitoes are intolerable for man and beast ; even 'in the back country, fifty or sixty miles from the river, they are as bad as on the frontages. The roung grasshoppers are making their ap pearance in clouds throughout many parts of the back country. All stock are looking ex ceedingly well — but suffer from the many in sects that infest the runs at this season of the year.* On Tnpra station a summer lambing has been cut, and although the per centage may not be considered satisfactory, yet the lambs look more than one would expect — being of excellent size and quality. The following are the stock movements for the week : — 3rd inst. — 3300 mixed sheep crossed from Wil lurali to Booligal, Hon Wm Campbell's, (care of Morrison). 4th — 4000 ewes crossed fhe pttnt from Toogimbie to Monaro blocks, ...

MELBOURNE. (from oor own correspondent.^ Februarv 31. The delegates at the Sydney Conference have (after being unavoidably prevented bv a public holiday, and Mr Parkes's absence) set tled down to business, nevertheless they manage to mingle pleasure with it, as last Saturday tbey had a trip to the Zig-z^g, which, although the weather was not fine, was thoroughly enjoyed. Dr Lang proposed the health of the visitors. The Victorian Chief Secretary in a suave little speech, ac knowledged the New South Wales railway enterprise, and expressed his hope to live to sit as member of a Parliament of the whole of the Australian colonies. Mr Whitten the Engineer-ia-Chief of Railways, New South Wales, admitted that the 5ft 3in gauge was the best, and totally condemned tbe 3ft 6in gauge, stating the 'impossibility of the latter admitting: curves of two or threee chains radius, and averred that the Fairlie engine had been altogether over-praised. - The dele gates are deep in that knotty question th...

SERMON ON SPIRITISM. The Rev Mr Potter delivered a j discourse last evening in St. Mary's Church, Hotham, upon Spiritism : and Christian Doctrine, before a very large audience. He took for his text the first epistle of the (Grala tinns. 1st chanter and 8th verse. u But though we or an angel from j heaven preach any other doctrine j nnto you than that which we have preached let him be accursed ;' and ! the 4th chapter of the first epistle of St .John, and the 2nd and 3rd verses, u Thereby know ye the spirit of God ; every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that con fesseth not that Jesus - hrist is come in the flesh is not of God.' The first preachers of the Gospel were the heralds of change, but the change which they heralded was external i rather than internal. It was a change of order and form., and not of substance.
