On Saturday last. a gale from the east i\iid south cast began to-be felt in Syd ney,- and continued for days with great vio-. lence, awakening fears for tho safety of vessels outside. On Monday this gale brought immense rain clouds which inundated several of the northern valleys, and fell with special copiousness on Mount Royal, where the Patterson and Williams take their rise. Theso rains have caused tiio Hunter to over flow and flood the unfortuiiHte town of West Maithmd, whero so many -floods have ravaged the property of- the people and endangered their lives. All the northern rivers were more or less flooded, though no other places have suffered at all like Majtland. And the Government has been in communication with the local authorities on the Bellin ger, Maeleay, and the Manning, with a view to sup ply the pressing wants of those who have been flooded out.
