PRESENTATION. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Advertiser — 11 September 1874

PIRESENTATION. _Mr. W. Williams, who has been eighteen years a master in the Church of England school, Coburg, has evidently, during that time, been appreciated by Ihs pupils, and the inhabitants. During the week,, as a mark of appreciation, his pupils pre sented him with a very handsome writing desk, walnut wood, inlaid, bearing a suita ble inscription. This, no doubt, is a source of great satisfaction to Mr. Wil liams, who, we hope, will still retain the regard of his pupils during his carcer in the new State School.

THE THISTLE ACT. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Advertiser — 11 September 1874

THE THISTLE ACT. It would be well for the Borough of Brunswick if the Council would take steps to enforce thts act ,at, an early date. Through neglect in past'years'the thistle nuisance has increased very much, and some parts of the district are threatened with a complete overgrowth of them. WVhile the plants are young they should be cut down. It is altogether unfair that any man's land should be ruined in conse quence of the Council's neglect of duty.

BRUNSWICK STATE NIGHT SCHOOL. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Advertiser — 11 September 1874

BRUNSWICK STATE NIGHT SCHOOL. This long talked of movement, we are very~pleased'to learn, has now resolved itself into a reality, and promises to be a success beyond the contemplation of its most sanguine promoters. Although it has onlybeen opened this week, close upon a hundred scholars are now enrolled, and is rather a formidable tax on the energies of thohead master, Mir. Sheppard, who at the outset has experienced some little difficulty in obtaining assistant teachers, who as a rule do not much care for night work, the guid pro quo, in the shape of pay, not being commensurate with the attendant inconveniences. We regard the attendance as highly creditable to the youth of Brunswick, more especially as the greater part are worked hard during the day at the various industrial establish ments in the borough.

HOTHAM CAB STAND. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Advertiser — 11 September 1874

HOTHAM CAB STAND. At the recent meeting of the Hotham Council an application was received from the cab owners, asking that a cab . stand mightbe made at the corners of Errol and. Victoria streets.' It is very pro bable that the request will be acceded to, but we fancy the step the cab owners have taken will not contribute much to their own interest. It is found in 'town that for one passenger who enters the cab at the Ilotham stand, ten are picked up on the road, and a great many of the cab drivers prefer to run along the route in order to pick up stray passengers rather than await 'their turn to be called off the stand.

M.U.I.O.O.F. BOXING DAY GALA. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Advertiser — 11 September 1874

,M1.U.I.O.O.F. UBOXING. DLY GALA. ;''Ve0regret?'to leari'c that the District Quarterly Comniittee of the above Order 'hao'idecided not to hold the usual'anni 'versary fete in the Society's ground on Boxing Day. Their reasons -appear any thing but satisfactory. It is asserted, 'singularly enough for the .first' time, that the conduct and behavior of the persons who attend these gatherings has brought discredit upon the Order; hnd'that iniproper' scenes have been allowed to spoil the 'enjoyment of , a great. many. people. . WV' think the decision arrived at is, an unjust one. As there is `no evidence to support the charge " immoral scenes" occurring at the gardens, it is to be hoped, upon due consideration, and after sifting the mat ter thoroughly, the committee may alter their minds. It is no secret that many attempts have been' made .to secure these grounds on Boxing Day by rival' caterers, and consequently we do not fear that the public , will .bd deprived of their day's' amusement...

EXPENDITURE OF THE LOAN. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Advertiser — 11 September 1874

EXPENDITURE OF THE LOA,. Renewed activity is observable in the western part of the borough caused by the expenditure of the remaining por tion of the loan on improvements in the streets. A variety of small contracts have been accepted for kerbing and channelling, and laying down " tarred pavement," and as soon as these works are completed, this portion, of the borough will' present a' decidedly imra proved appearance. Another loan of £20,000 or £30,000, judicibusly ex= pended in improving the streets, would completely' change the appearance of IIotham, and add about 50 per cent. to the value of real estate in a great many localities.

THE NEW MEAT MARKET. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Advertiser — 11 September 1874

THE NEW MEAT MARKET. Previous to the close of the Hotham Council, a deputation attended on behalf of the Butchers' Committee, to inform the Council officially that they had re- moved their stalls from the City Meat Market to the new building in Elizabeth street, Hotham. Mr. Reynolds, as Chairman of the Committee, mentioned that the butchers were willing to pay for the services of the borough scavenger to remove the offal from the market, and to keep it clean, and hoped that the ut- most good feeling would exist between them and the Borough Council. In the course of conversation it was stated that the opening of the markets would be celebrated by an entertainment, and Mr. Reynolds invited the Mayor and Councillors to attend. It was ultimately agreed that the wishes of the Butchers' Committee, with reference to engaging   the services of the scavenger, should be placed in writing, and then the Local Board of Health would give the matter every consideration. The deputation...

The residents of West and North Mel. bourne will he glad to learn that the dii. culties which have so impeded the exer tions of the Committee. of Ratepayers in in their endeavours to obtain the Victoria street site for a Wholesale Vegetable Market have now all been surmounted.
