THE figures published elsewhere as to iaite ^increase for Queensland of sheep and cattle daring 1&91, are almost startling, and were it not for the official imprimatur we would almost feel disinclined to accept them as reliable. Under tbe circum stances surrounding their compilation however, there can be no doubt as to th ir accuracy. The increase as set forth is 634,495 cattle and o^er 3,300,000 sh<*ep, the value of which can be safely put down at about £2,000,000. This, in addition to tbe yearly consumption and the value of the wool, hides, etc., exported, demon strates what a magnificent asset to the country the pastoral industy is. With such an increase, and with the Southern markets prac tically closed against the colony, there was no other recourse but the development of meat freez ing, extract making, and boiling down.
