DIRTY HUMANS. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 27 January 1898

DIRTY HUMANS. This paper lias for a long time past been very forcibly seized with the fact that a majority of the working classes .of North Queensland is almost oblivious of the existence of soap, anti quite content to remain theoretically satisfied that water for washing or cleansing purposes' is a useful and necessary element. ; We venture to assert that seventy-five per cent of the every day run ol" North "Queenslander does not have a shower, or plunge bath every morning, and that 40 per cent do not so much as wash their hands and faces in orthodox manner each day before breakfast. This is a horrible idea, but however distasteful, true Fifty per cent of the same class of people, after working hard all day, with perspiration pouring in a stream from every pore, retire to rest without divesting themselves of thc sour-smelling perspiration-soaked shirt, which has probably protected them for a week, nor do they, in two cases out of three, trouble to remove their stained and clammy tr...

From Our Point of View. PRICE OF COFFEE. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 27 January 1898

Prom Our Point of View. - PRICK OF COFFEE. The inquiring eye of tliis {»per once rend a letter from .a Brisbane branch of a ' leading firm of Australasian coffee and spice merchants, wherein that firm stated I ita overwhelming love for Cairns coffee growers, for whom it felt all the affection of at least two mothers, a father, and a big^ brother. lu simple language that type-written missive poured that firm's soul into the Inp of our district coffee planters, and vowed the sender's inten- tion of shedding their last drop of Queen Street blood, in favor of the poor struggl- ing Cairns coffee raiser. The only-thing they modestly asked in returnwasa pledge from the growers to supply them with all I the coffee grown. The price to be paid the growers would always be found the ¡ outside figures ruling. After this some- what comforting assurance, .' local growers bought rocking chairs, felt easy, and their future appeared «ll right. That comfort- ing assurance, however, had the bottom knoc...

SPEAKING OF LONG AGO. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 27 January 1898

SPEAKING OF LONG AGO. To-day, as I i>en these lines, one picture from the long-vanished past lises ? in-my ~tmiiuury nu. douri y ?. MN , though it hung ou a wal] - before my very eves. It is of a hoy about four- teen yeats cid, propped up in a great ai'iu-chair with pillows and bed- clothes and gazing through a window. Ile is just convalescing after a long and dangerous illness, and is still thin, pule, ¡md weak. The strong I anns of his loving father have taken him from the bed and placed him snugly by the window in order that ho may see his; playmates at their games in the snow ; for the timo is mid- winter. They' wave their hands to him and ho waves his hand feebly to them. The scene is from my awn boyhood, forty years «go. What magic has conjured' it up pow ] Only a scnteuco from a letter. HODGKINSON STOREKEEPERS. [To THE EDITOR.] [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 27 January 1898

HODGKINSON STOREKEEPERS. [To THE EDITOR.] Sir,-I wish on behalf of the miners of the Hodgkinson Goldfield to pro- test against the" views held by the local correspondent of the Townsville " Bulletin " and " Herald." That writer holds us miners up to scorn, because we deal off the Chinese firm' of 'Wah Lee & Co. Wherein lies' thc offence? Wah.Lee & Co. gives the miners all over the field unlimited credit," anoV more power to them. They are in a position to stick toa miner from crushing to crushing, and no European storekeeper on the field can or will'do the same. Under those circumstances,, why should I . and others be blamed ? The Chinamen charge very 'fair prices, supply goods of the best qualitv.'ancl never harrass or lM»tlM3r-- ihcirT'iamooic» i bctwcra ctirahings.'; Surely then .wo have every reason to feel gnteful to Wah Lee & Co., who are white men so far as their trading is concerned.-Yours sinrerelv. Cairns Municipal Election. TO THE ELECTORS. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 27 January 1898

CiJrai Municipal Eleotíon. TO THE ELECTORS. Fellow Townsmen, I beg to respectfully offer myself for re-election at the forthcom- ing election. I have now served you to the best of my ability for the psst three years, and during that time I fearlessly claim to hive done my duty consistently, and to have conserved the best interests of the Municipality. Daring those three years the overdraft npon: which the Council was paving 8 per cent has been reduced £8000. This is a big saving, and one that was absolntelynecesssrytsnd although many necessary works had as a consequence to be deferred, I think on the whole the - roads in thc Municipality were well attended to. If re elected I am determined to bring about an alteration in our road making system. The raaterial' now' used is not as good as cm be procured, and if harder material was obtained, I think it would, al- though dearer at first, be cheaper in the long ran. I believe in doing a little work at a time and doing that work thoroughl...
