SWINDLING BY A CHINAMAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 21 May 1869

SWINDLING BY A CHINAMAN WE (Armidale Express) understand, on reliable authority, that a gross imposition and robbery was practised upon a storekeeper at the Rocky River recently, which clearly shows how well versed some of the Chinese are in rascality and deception. It appears that Mr, Weston, of the Rocky, has another store at Maitland Point, which is managed by a Mrs. Jackson, who is in the habit of pur- chasing gold from the diggers. Some of the Chinese have been regular customers of hers for some years in selling gold, and one man who, for several weeks previous to the occur- rence we are about narrating, sold her parcels of gold, which were always found to be quite genuine in quality. However, John China- man paid his usual visit, and handed Mrs. Jackson a parcel of gold, done up very - methodically, in the usual fashion. Without thinking for a moment that it differed from former parcels, Mrs. Jackson, after carefully weighing it, made the necessary calculation, and handed the ...

SHEIK GOWDAH. This, individual, a n»iivp of Ceylon, is era ployod ni Tatters?ll\s Hotel, Dubbo, The Dispatch says he possesses a stomach of extraordinary digestive powers, beating the ostrich by long odds, for this bird, by all accounts, cac only digest pavjng-stones. He cannot, however, like some of his countrymen, swallow a nheep, wool, tail, horns, 'and trotters included, but be can drink a glass of H-nne&8y*8 battle-axe, and swallow the tumbler* afferwards. Cut wine glasses are apparently as great a luxury to him as sweet tiisctiii8 are' to a child. He crushes the globe of the glass between his teeth, without injuring hi* gumt-j and then swallows the pieces ,; A *ine glass disappears in two mouthfuls, a tumbler in four. He leaves the pedestal of the former, and the base of the latter,1 as heing too hard and coarse.
