The Bulletin PUBLISHED DAILY. TUESDAY, JULY 16, 1907. JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES. Relations between the United States of America and Japan appear to be steadily drifting from bad to worse. A war which was thought only a few weeks ago to be in the last degree im- probable is now spoken of in language which conveys the impression that it is believed to be difficult to prevent. The despatch of American warships to the Pacific is said to have been deter- mined upon some time ago, and not       to be due to the Republic's strained re- lations with Japan. If that is so,the New York newspapers which advised the action as a necessary precautional measure wilfully exacerbated the rela- tions between their country and Japan. This means that there is a section of the people in the Eastern States, though doubtless only a small minority just now, which views the prospect of a war with Japan with complacency if not with satisfaction. WEDDINGS LAMBERT-HUTCHINSON.   The marriage of Mr Lionel Simpson Lambert, third son of Mr and Mrs George Shelton Lamburt, Indooroopilly, Brisbane, with Miss. Joan Hutchinson, second daughter of Mr and Mrs John H. Hutchinson, Kangaroo Point, Bris bane, was quietly soIemnised at St. Peter's Church, West End. Townsville, on Monday afternoon, Canon Wil liams officiating. The bride looked very pretty gowned in a frock of white figured Swiss muslin the skirt being arranged with bands of stitched glace, dainty coatee of embroidery, outlined with bands of glace; becomlng hat of folded chiffon and crinoline straw, swathed with embroidered chiffon scarf, and finished with a long white ostrich feather. Mr and Mrs Lambert have taken a house in Pax ton-street, North Ward, where they will in future reside.

A cable message has been sent by Squires to Wren earnestly requesting to be released from his contract and expressing a desire to retire from the ring. This was ..the special topic of con versation in sporting ana other circles to-day. The action of Squires created no ejid of surprise. Wren' cabled to Reynolds, leaving the matter of giving an answer to Squlres's request for release from his contract entirely in his. hands.

Mr T Gatenby, the owner of the Grand National winner, Bribery. «s °ne of the best-known sportsmen in Tas mania. He Is a noted sheep-breeder, his home, being at Cressy, near Laun ceston. Mr- Gatenby, who has always taken a great interest In the turf, is a member of the committee of the Tas manlan Turf Club at Launceston. Ho recently purchased from Mr J. Pigdon the thoroughbred stallion Hova, who, unfortunately, dropped dead shortly after his arrival in Tasmania. L. H. Hewitt, the New Zealand Joc key, rode Major Edwards's Shy Lad to victory in the Selling Plate, of 200 sovs., at Epsom on Derby Day. There were 39 starters for the race, Shy Lad being at 8 to 1. Association waited upon the Minister for Defence to-day with a request for financial assistance for the reception of the team of English rifle men which will shortly visit Australia.
