Young. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

Young. (from our own correspondent.) The Weather.— For the most part we are having a very mild June here, bub on Monday morning early snow began to fall, and continued until well on in the day. Quite phenomenal, and that antiquated institution, ' the memory of the oldest inhabitant,' wanders away back into the early seventies to find a parallel. It is quite like early spring again now. Court for Morangorell. — The Morangorell people are agitating to have a Petty Sessions Court estab lished there, and they certainly ought to have one, as there is now a good deal of settlement about there, and it is a long way — about 40 miles — to either Temora or Young. Let U3 hope they will succeed. June 24th, 1896.

Land Settlement. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

Land Settlement. Our good friends out Cunnamulla way are making a brave effort to bring about a closer settlement on their magnificent lands. They will . soon have the railway with them, and the facilities generally for the agricultural pastoralist will be iiiuuu eunauL'eu. iu is wen Known that the Cunnamulla areas include some of the finest lands in Queensland, lands which are really capable of providing for a population equal to the whole of Queensland, and it is reasonable that an effort should be made to take a more full advantage of that with which Dame Nature has been so lavish. The idea is that the Government should proclaim a system of artesian areas, put down bores and either sell or lease the lands to settlers, making an annual charge for the water sufficient to cover interest and working expenses. We are assured by residents of Ounna mulla that there would be no diffi culty in letting the land out in small blocks if there was a sure water sup ply, and the State would very...

Oil for Ticks. EXPERIMENTS AT INGHAM. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

Oil for Ticks. EXPERIMENTS AT INGHAM. Experiments at the Ingham Dip, in the presence of Mr. Bruce, Chief Inspector of Stock of New South Wales, and Mr. Pound, the Queens land Government Bacteriologist, have proved that cotton seed oil is not a sure destroyer of ticks. Information reached Brisbane on Saturday 20th to the effect that on the previous Wednesday some bullocks were dipped, and on the following day, on the cattle being inspected, ticks in various stages of development were found upon them. The oil employed in this case was from cotton seed. An experiment was also made with the oil supplied by the Apollo Company and Kitchen and Sons, Ltd., with most satisfactory results, every tick on the beasts being killed. In the first case, on the examination being made, the cattle were found well covered with the cotton seed oil. The experiment is a valuable one. It shows that cotton seed oil cannot really be depended upon, while the Apollo article does its work in a thoroughly satisfa...

Our "Gossip" [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

Our 'Gossip' Some queer letters come to our es teemed ' Gossip.' Here's one of them. It probably expresses the ideas of a lot of people ! Dear ' Gossip,' Do you know you must be one of the best men I don't know ? For I am sure you must become a little im bued v.ith some of those nice moral preceprs that you are always preaching to us, unless, like some preachers, you don't practice what you preach. It must be very pleasant to sit comfort ably in your easy chair, and tire off all those nice sentiments at us. 1 often think when I read them that I'll try and carry out some of the ideas you put on paper, but, alas, human nature is very weak ; I find I am no better than I should be, after all, nor, in deed, half so good if the truth were told. I was greatly struck with your ' Gossip ' about speaking well of your . neighbours, and though I am a pretty good hand at doing the other thing there's no saying what that little article of yours may do towards work ing a reformation ! I often wond...

Stock Poisoning. OFFICIAL REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

Stock Poisoning. OFFICIAL REPORT, We have just received from the Chief Inspector of Stock, Mr. Alex. Bruce, a copy of the report of Mr. James Douglas Stewart,, M.R.CV.S , on the deaths of a number of sheep and horses out in the Riverina dis trict. Last January and February, during the continuation of the awful drought, a number of valuable rams ana horses died on the Wyveru, Groongal, Bringagee and Benerbmbah Stations. Mr. Stewart was sent by the Government to report on the oc currence. The reporc to hand is ex ceedingly dear. The district is terribly infested with rabbits, or rather, it was infested before the drought. The tanks were fenced with rabbit-proof netting, and water poisoned with strychnine was laid for the rabbi'.0. On some runs phosphorised pollard was also used. The rabbits were killed off in millions, and. undt-r normal coudi tions, that would have been an un mitigated blessing. When the droughb was at its height, the stock developed morbid tastes and took to ea'ing ...

Travelling Stock Routes. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

Travelling Stock Routes. By a. T. Bolton. T am pleased to note that umler date of the 19th Juno you devote an article to the subject of Travelling Stock Routes. Agreeable to your mandate in your concluding sentence, I have endeavored to figure the thing out for myself, so far as this world i.i concerned, leaving the Nemesis of fate lur luuuit; uuuaiucitii'iwu. Having done business as a S'ock and Station Agent upon one of the most travelled st -ok routes of the I colony for somewhere about 20 years, I I can state that your article is miid in its condemnation of the existing evil, and I venture to think that you have not seen as much of the disgusting spectacle of stock travelling 'lay nhw i day (aye ! week after week) without ! once obtaining a good feed, as I have, ; or you would wax a little warmer upon ' the subject. Whilst the system obtains of dual -. occupation of stock routes, so long will ?? the evil to which you refer exiit. By ; dual occupation I mean whilst the routes are ...

A Stock Agent's License. TO THE EDITOR "S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

A Stock Agent's License. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir. — Every legitimate agent must endorse the remarks of your corres pondent 'Agent,' but we must actt and as there will be a large number of agents in town to the Sheep Show, I would suggest that they meet, discuss the subject and see if something cannot be done to renudy matters. The city M.iypnrs ;ir'i- /vwrprnpil ;i,nd should in terest themselves. A license fee there should be. and certainly not less than £10 per annum. It is not a question of competition, but there are a great many Qiore a' ho business than can make an honest livelihood, and the un scrupulous live by robbing the public and blackmailing the legitimate agent. If a meeting were held there are many cognate subjects that would crop up, and could be thrashed out ; but by all means W. us have the license fee imposed, as it will act as somewhat of a guarantee to the public and a protection to the legitimate agent, who must indeed be blind or indolent, or ...

Our Book Review. TO THE EDITOR "S.S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

I got ' A Plea for a Simpler Life' from you. and I was wondering before it came if there was anything simpler than ' damper and mutton,' and thought, perhaps, it might be ' brose nr n- irrirl rrp ' sppim? tlie n.nthni' w:vm a Scotchman. Gold Mining. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 30 June 1896

Gold Mining. The manager of a New Zealand gold mine recently sent an imperative demand to a shareholder for the pay ment of a ' call, *' and received this reply, which is too good to be lost : — ' Dear Sir,— I have your letter of this r1n.fa- n.nrl nnr.p. that vour directors propose to proceed against me. Your prospectus stated that one of the objects of your company was to seek, win, and work gold in ? and else where. Things not turning out well in ? , your directors apparently consider it their duty to seek, win, aud work gold elsewhere, i.e., out of me. I can assure you, however, that I am not an auriforous vein, the only lode I possess is a lode of debt, and as a gold mine T *hall be a failure. Your prospectus estimates a yield of lozof gold per ton on 30,000 tons of quartz crusher! per annum. You may ' crush ' me, but you will find that I will not yield nearly so much. My person (which for the purposes of this calculation may be considered quartz) weighs, roughly speaking, lOsb...
