HER MAJESTY'S THEATRE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 March 1898

HER MATESTY'S THEATRE. Mr. Wilson Barrett's version of Hall Caine's novel ' The Manxman,' has for the past two weeks been played in Sydney to overflowing houses. With Mr. Barrett and Miss Maud Jeffries as loving truthful Pete and erring Rose respectively, it charmed the audience alike by its pathos, dramatic spirit and direction. The story is clear, even to those who have not read the novel, and its successive phases are developed with a breadth and sustained interest seldom apparent in adaptation. Anti-Semitism in Austria. BOYCOTTING THE DEAD. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 March 1898

Anti-Semitism in Austria. BOYCOTTING THE DEAD. Anti-Semitism in Austria is apparently attacking the people's brain. They vie with each other in spiteful feats. A very neat one is told of the Vienna ' Aca demical Singing Society.' A a concert of that Society a young artiste, Signora Cuneri, was to sing one of Mendelssohn's songs. At the instance of one of the members of the Society the lady was requested to ehange the programme, because the students would not have the Jew Mendelssohn. In the end, however, the lady's participation in the entertainment was entirely declined, because the German national students were preparing ' unpleasant proceedings ' against the sin ger, who had dared to think even for a moment of Mendelssohn in a programme of the Society's concert. It is really carrying things somewhat far to boycott even the dead. But fanaticism knows np bounds, and certainly is always devoid of reason. And we call this the age of progress.

A Prince of Philanthropists [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 March 1898

A Prince of Philanthropists. The late .Baron Kirsch was a man of an unusually philanthropic spirit. Possessed of great wealth he seemed to have an impression that he was simply a custodian, and not an owner, and that he could give no higher proof of this than to use his 'vast fortune for the benefit of his fellow-men. The total amount of his benefactions will probably never be ascertained, but the following statement made by the Hon, Oscar S. Strauss in a recent number of 'The Forum,' gives some idea of their size, variety, and character : Jewish Colonization Association, £10,000,000 ; De Hirsch irustiortne unirea states, z,ouu, uuuao!. ; trust tuna for education in Galicia, 5,000,000 ; fund for assistance of tradesmen in Vienna and Buda-Pesth, l,455,000dol. ; fund for the Hungarian poor, l,455,000dol. ; turf winnings during 1891-94 distributed for charitable pur poses, 500,000 ; gift to the Empress of Russia for charitable purposes during Russo-Turkish war 200,000 ; gifts in 1893 to...
