NEWSPAPERS AND NEWSPAPER MEN [Newspaper Article] — Rosedale Courier — 28 January 1915

NEWSPAPERS AND NEWSPA-1 PER MEN I was asked the other day by a representative of the local Press - a hungry, sad eyed specimen of humanity, who looked as if he bad been going through a long succession of self-denial weeks-to write an article for the next issue, as he was, as usual, short of "copy.'1 Well, now I've got a task I'll set about it, and take for my subject the rather personal one of "Newspapers and Newspaper Men." First, take the newspaper man: as a man merely. What a peculiar speci man he is. What a combination of vices and virtures so appositively dis played. To parody Hamlet : 'What a piece of work is a pressman 1 How infinite in Ignorance. ID action how like a machine J in form and moving how express and erratic." A press man as generally known is a sad looking individual with a paper to fill up and publish every week, ..or twice a week, as the case may be, _aod_this_is supposed to" be never "eff" his" mind He dreams about advertisements and job printing at night, and...

THE FARMER FARMED [Newspaper Article] — Rosedale Courier — 28 January 1915

FARMER FARMED To induce the raising of an export able quantity of maize in Queensland the Government is considering guaran teeing a price that would allow a margin ol profit for the risk of planting. A better plan would be to remove the heavy taxation which now burdens the primary producer. Among a host of other taxes the farmer has to pay-as the rhymstec puts it Tax on the cornsheller, tax on the plough, Tax on the rugs he put over his cow Tax on the bucket, and tax on the pail, A heavier tax on his boitle~ of ale ; fax on the roofing and tax on the door, Tax on his cottage from ceiling to floor; Tax, heavy tax on his boots and bis clothes While prices are fixed for crops that he grows." Tbe evidence was largely ol a general nature, some inter esting admissions beinr made in re epect to Kilmany Park Estate. Mr Ilastie said lie could sjo no ob jection to tbe period over which the payments of settlers were spread being extended from Sli to 40 years, because most of the settlers paid up long be fore that time. During the first two or three years-the critical period the settlers should be called upon to make no reduction of tbe principal. The money would be better extended in making improvements. Mr Plain: How do you account for men shying off closer settlement ? p Witness : I find that a good deal of the lack of demand for closer settle ments blocks is due to the eironeoos ideas of settlers with regard to the operatioD of Clause GO. Jf that be ao, then a different ligh: is cast upon the matter. The present bridge is said to he too low, not suit able for public traffic, too costly to connect with through roads, and, to all appearances, according to the version of the travelling public, should be lower down stream by some two miles, which statements Kilnnny Settlers do not agree with.
