Barnett, Brown lield, LePage and Marriott, J's.P., Glary Roberts, married woman resid inU at Mentone, was charged with wij fully illtreatinz a boy about 6 years of age. It was stated defendant was the foster mother of the boy. Phoebe Judd, married- woman, resid ing at Wickham road, 31oortsbbin, said that on Mlay she was passing de fendant's house in Charman road, Cheltenham, and noticed the boy rush round the side of the house and de fendant running after him. Shc saw defendant strike the boy on the head with a piece of Ilat wood. The child lay down the ground for several minutes. On another occasion witness saw defendant chase the boy with a knife. Alford's return in the East Ward, is a new force in local municipal politics and is both original and thorough in his unorthodox methods of. conducting his campaign. lie holds that candi dates should address the electors, and the absence of halls in suitalble locali ties is no deterrent to his deternina tipn to do so. In conseuuence, he is probably the first aspirant for muni cipal honours in Brighton to express views from the tail-board of a van on a street corner. A vacant allot nent at the corner of Nepean road and Ilay street was selected by him on Tuesday night. and over a hund red ratepayers and residents listened to his address. Mr. W. Kelly was chairman, the van being comfortably tilled urp with chairs press table, election literature, and lighted by an acetylene installation.
