HIeidelberg Police Court.% MONDAY, JULY 283. (Before Cr. Keam and Messrs Carruth ers and Jones, J.P.'s). SUNDAY TRADING. Inspector of Police v. Emma Dight, charging her with persons being found on the premises of the Darebin Bridge hotel on Sunday, June 24; with having the bar door open; and with traffic in liquor. Defendant pleaded guilty, and admit ted being fined in February last for a similar offence. Constable F. T. Williamson gave evi dence that he and Constable Burrows entered the hotel about noon on the day in question, and of those in the room two men were under the influence of liquor. Defendant said that some of the young fellows were friends of her son, who was at the front, and one had called in on his way from church. On the first two charges defendant was fined £5 and 7/6 costs on each charge, and the third one was withdrawn. Hugh McKay, Jas. Hannahan, and Chas. Hattam's, Northcote, are specialising in the gentlemen's department. Applications close on Tuesday for the position of book-keeper and collector for the shire council. Wintry weather means warm cloth ing, and the place to get it is Hattam and Hattam's, Northcote. Applications are called by the Eltham shire council for a ranger, and tenders are invited for a lamplighter at Eltham, and the supply of spalls or metal. While many people are enjoying the privileges of a free country too little at tention is given by some to the heroic deeds of those who are helping to keep it so, and when a father has lost three sons in the war, as Mr George Connor, of Heidelberg, has done, it should make a few of our eligible men. rise to the occa sion and do their bit also. John George Conner, the eldest, enlisted at Geelong in July, 1915, and trained at Seymour and Geelong. He left Australia in Jan uary, 1916, took part in the fighting at Bapaume and Bullecourt, and was killed in action at Bullecourt on May 12, 1917. Prior to enlisting he was a landscape gardener. Ie was an active member of the Manchester Unity Independent Or der of Oddfellows, Loyal Geelong Lodge, and the cricket club, and was also trea surer of the Gardeners' Union during its existence in Geelong.
