Is Conscription Necessary. ATTITUDE OF DONALD SHIRE COUNCIL. WAS THEIR MOTION A POPULAR ONE? PUBLIC MEETING TO DECIDE. [Newspaper Article] — Donald Times — 19 May 1916

Is Conscription Neces= sary. ATTITUDE OF DONALD SHIRE COUNCIL. WAS THEIR MOTION A POPULAR ONE? PUBLIC MEETING TO DECIDE.. At the Jast meeting of the Donald Shire. Council Cr Wortley said he noticed in the outward correspondence a letter to the A.N.A. committee re use of the Shire Hall for public meetings. They desired, in calling the meeting to discuss conscription, that it should be a public meeting. They did not want it to be an A.N.A. meeting. He thought that coun cillors should assist to that end. In reference to the motion favoiing conscription, at that time there may have been some doubt as to whether the Council's action was justified. Certainly any action favoring con scription by a public body ,is justi fied at the present time. There had recently been a secret meeting at Parliament House, aud, judging by the attitude of the I;abor Party and otliets, the Minister did not give sufficient reason why conscription should not come into force. He moved that the President call a p...

Disloyal Aliens. SHOULD THEY BE INTERNED? [Newspaper Article] — Donald Times — 19 May 1916

Disloyal Aliens. SHOULD THEY BE INTERNED ? At the Donald Council meeting on Tuesday the above question again cropped up, as the outcome of a request from the Australian Citizens' Committee (Echucd.)*, which advocated the drastic course of interning all male alien subjects over 15 who were considered dis loyal. Cr McNab : At a picnic in New South Wales the Germans hoisted their flag and kept it flying all the time while the picnic was on. It was time such people were interned The President thought that was a matter for the Government. Coun cillors were elected by ratepayers, and should work inside the L,ocal Government Act. Cr Green: The President's ruling is perfectly right. We put men in power who are looking after these i things, and I don't think they are going to be dictated to by every body. If the incident reported had occurred iu qui* own district we would he justified in taking actum. Cr l(avery thought the President's ruling was correct, and after further discussion (he mat...
