OFF TO TASMANIA Newcastle Delegates Depart On Thursday last the Newcastle delegates left on th^ir mission to the Federal Convention of Master Builders' at Hobart. Mr. A. E Ratcliffe, the Association's Presi dent, in his report to the Convention mentions that the 'membership of the Newcastle As sociation now totals 1 50, which is the highest on record,. The building statistics for ,the. year amount to £802.734 and consist of Newcastle city £329,102, Newcastle District, £.473,632. He adds that industrial dispute as far as , the members of the Association are concerned, has been practically.unknown. due undoubtedly to, the depression now existing in the trade. Mr. Ratcliffe adds- that the Newcastle As ? sociation .takes a serious view of the methods adopted by the Government in . affording un employment .relief by .day labour and suggests that better economic purposes would be served by ? letting the work on contract. PUMPING OUT THE ZUYDER ZEE What Wonders Will Be Won The Dutch people have started pumping out the Zuyder Zee, in order to add a new pro- vince of over 535,000 acres to Holland, which the increasing population requires urgently. The area is divided into four "polders'"or   districts, and operations began on one in Feb- ruary last by starting three huge electric motors, of 1000 horse power each. Each of the three pumps has a capacity of 3¼ million cubic metres of water per day, and by their means 50,000 acres will be added to Holland within eight months, and within two years the reclaimed     land will be so freed from salt that it will be fit for agriculture. The whole drainage   scheme will entirely enclose the Zuyder Zee   from the North Sea by the end of 1932.
