NEWS OF THE WEEK. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 2 January 1869

NEWS OF THE WEEK. On Saturday and Monday last Evans' moving panorama, depicting the incidents connected with the shipwreck of the barque Peruvian on the coast of Northern Australia, in 1846, and the soventeon yeare captivity amongst the aboriginals of James Morrill, the sole survivor of the ill fated crew, was exhibited at Webb's Assembly room, Qunda gai. The paintings, which are executed by Mr. R. Setright, the well-known scenic artist, convey a graphic idea of the wreck on the coral reef, the sufferings of the hapless survivors, the semi-tropical scenery of the interior, and the habit3 and customs of aboriginal life. All the various scenes, from the departure of the Peruvian from Sydney Harbour to the final rescue of Morrill by some early settlers on the Burdokin Uiver, are of great merit, and the entertainment is altogether an agreeable and an instructive one. As ah illustration of how simply a bush fire may be originated, we may mention that last Sunday as Air. M. Doyle was sitt...

TUUUT. I?EOM OUE COEBEBPONPENT^ December 31st. — The weather in Tumut is again fiercely hot, and our present position is far from enviable, existing as we are in the centre of a huge belt of fire, for all around tho town thwbuab. is burning. Since my last communication Christinas has been with us and gone. Christmas ! forsooth. Pardon me, my Australian brother, if I venture to suggest that you have no Chrittraas. I will grant that you venerate tho sacred character of the season, and you certainly 'do your beat to. keep high holiday. Considering you* mirrdutidinga you engage in various out-dnor sports With most commendable earnestness, but what a contrast is an Australian Christmas to those one who has reminiscences of the same season in the mother country can recall when the Ancient Guest arrives amid frost and enow, and where to wish one's friend a ' Merry Christina's ' is something more than a hollow compliment. - Notwithstanding the intense heat of the weather our Boxing-day race...

ADELOXQ. (FEOM OUE COKEESPONDEOT.) Decembeb 31st. — The weather still continues as unpleasantly hot, dusty, and parching as it was whgnl last wrote, and -Water is drying up iu all directions. The old year has certain ly visited us with his displeasure ere he left us, and I only trust his successor will be merciful, as a new ruler ought to be, and send us some rain soon. Messrs. D. Wilson and Co.'s engine arrived here to-day, most opportunely, or crushing would shortly have been quite at a standstill. On the 24th ult.,. as a man of the name of Pewter was riding in the direction of the reef his horse ran him against a tree, causing him several internal injuries. He is now under the care of Dr. Verschuer, and is progressing favorably. Travelling, sheep are going past here in thousand)), and the reserves are getting as bate of feed aa the road. How stock will subsist this winter, unless we have a good rain-fall shortly, I do not know. No cniHuinga have taken place since last I wrote. He...
