TIE BEAVIr: HADICAE ' SMITH CURTIS, El>lT03v. BEAVER, I»A... Friday Morning* March 14th, 1873. THE BEAVER FALLS COOLIK EX PEBIMENT. - ; i . There was a large meeting of citizens, at Beaver Falls *©n Tuesday evening, which protested vigorously Against Chinese importation, and passed resolutions denouncing the Cutlery Company for introducing them into their works, and criticised severely the answer of the Eeonomites on this subject, and refused to be comforted thereby. Manufacturers who have enjoyed fori so/ long the benefit of protection; cannot complain against the application of the same principle in favor of the workingmen of the country, especially when such manufacturers, by importing coolies, undertake to obtain a double advantage over rival cutlery companies and skilled American workingmen, in violation of the spirit of the laws that protect American manufacturers against the low priced products of European cheap labor. Why are manufacturers protected thus ? To ...

Correspondence of the Radical ''* Harrisburq, Marph 10, 187a The House passed tbe bill, giving the citizens of Somerset who lost by the fire in that borough last May, $75,000 out of State Treasury, and it now goes to the Governor for his signature. Everyone admits tbe policy of making the State an insurance company is not only a very bad policy, but also a very dangerous one ; yet men's sympathies run away with their judgment. If the citizens of Somerset are entitled to relief so is every other citizen of tbe Commonwealth who loses a house or barn by fire, and if this policy is once adopted it will soon bankrupt the Treasury. A fire in Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, such as occurred in Chicago and Boston, which may occur any day, would be disastrous to tbe Commonwealth if t...

HANGKAN FOOTBAND JBFPDATIS. An Unearthed Anecdote of Tfro FomII Politicians, i Foote and Davis were in Congress in 1848 (while Taylor and Cass wire candidates for the Presidency,) and obcopied a room together at Willard's Hotel. One evening, seated by the same {fireside, Mr. Davis read aloud from a polHIcalletter of Geri. Tay'or, and made running opmments for Mr. Foote's delectation, wbich the latter thought were rather too j friendly for a Democratic Senator to gi?t expression to in the heat of a canvass, j In fact, he intimated quite strongly jthat he thought Mr. Davis, at heart, w&j a Taylor man; that in spite of bis /professed support of the Democratic nominee, he would secretly rejoice over Cteni Taylor's election. Mr. Davis had njarried a daughter of Gen. Taylor, and this little circumstance, Mr. Foute suggested, was at the bottom of his colleague's compliment of the letter, adding, in bit impetuous way, that it would doubtless be a very nice thing to be a son-...
