Dole strategy: capitalize, but don't rely, on gender [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 15 April 1999
Dole strategy: capitalize, but don't rely, on gender By Ceei Connolly. The Washington Post SHIPPENSBURG. Pa. _ The first thing people notice about Elizabeth Dole is that she's a she. It is a distinction this presidential candidate-to-be often highlights. At a recent appearance in this rural Republican community, Dole laced her 45-minute address with tales of womanhood. Like the day in 1970 when, as an aide to President Nixon, she tried in vain to get into the Metropolitan Club in downtown Washington for an important business meeting. "' 'Lady.' '' Dole remembered the doorman replying, " i don't care if your name is Queen Elizabeth; you're not coming in.' "Today, Dolenoted to hearty applause, women can enter that club. From her appearance (painted nails, high heels and pearl chokers) to her rhetoric ("What does a woman like me have to offer the country? ), Dole is capitalizing on her most obvious asset: She is the only woman in a Republican lineup that currently includes nine...
FBI searches home of Los Alamos spy suspect [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 15 April 1999
FBI searches home of Los Alamos spy suspect By Bob Drogin, Los Angeles Times WASHINGTON _ Armed with a warrant, the FBI searched the New Mexico home, car and garage Saturday of a Taiwan-born computer expert who has been identified as the chief suspect in an apparent case of Chinese espionage of U.S. nuclear weapons secrets in the 1980s. After a six-hour search, witnesses said, the agents removed several boxes of papers, books and other items from the home of Wen Ho Lee, who was fired last month from his job as a senior computer scientist in a top-secret weapons modeling division at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The FBI obtained the courtauthorized warrant, its first since it began investigating the alleged espionage more than three years ago, after Lee's co-workers told agents in recent interviews that he had frequently carried work home from the lab, according to a senior law enforcement official. Lee, dressed in gardening clothes and fishing cap, ...
Melting in Antarctic quickens [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 15 April 1999
Melting in Antarctic quickens By Rob Stein, The Washington Post Two ice shelves in the Antarctic appear to be melting more quickly than had been predicted. Satellite images show that the Larsen B and Wilkins ice shelves, which are on opposite sides of the Antarctic Peninsula, have lost nearly 1,100 square miles in the past year, U.S. and British scientists said. The melting apparently was caused by a regional warming trend, said researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the British Antarctic Survey. Temperatures have risen by about 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit since the 1940s. "We have evidence that the shelves in this area have been in retreat for 50 years," David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey said in a statement issued last week. "To have retreat (of this size) in a single year is clearly an escalation."
Park service short of capital ideas to foil hungry beavers [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 15 April 1999
Park service short of capital ideas to foil hungry beavers By Richard Simon, Los Angeles Times WASHINGTON _ Politicians wish they got this kind of attention. A pair of pesky beavers ravaging Washington's beloved cherry trees, and the government's inability to solve the toothy problem, is the talk of the nation's capital. Never mind that the NATO leaders are coming to town. " 'Where can I see the beaver?' That has been the No. 1 asked question the last couple of days," National Park Service ranger Erin Broadbent said Friday. The Washington Post rated it a Page One story suggesting that two beavers, rather than the one suspected, appeared responsible for the damage. The paper also offered a Top 10 list of ways to catch a heaver, including: "Send Al Gore out to the Tidal Basin in a pink sombrero, with instructions to 'stand very still.' A local radio station is sponsoring a Name the Beavers contest. Wilbur and Fanne was one suggestion, a reference to former House Ways and Means...
Is professional wrestling getting a Raw deal? [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 15 April 1999
Is professional wrestling getting a Raw deal? By Deanna Symoski staff writer You're going along, minding your own business when suddenly a group of militant cult members kidnap you and throw you in the trunk of a car. Pretty upsetting, but not half as bad as realizing that this same shady group had kidnapped your sister and has proceeded to string her up in a sacrificial offering. Or maybe this buff chick that you've sort of had a thing for one day decides to punch you in the crotch and hook up with your arch nemesis. You can't believe she would stab you in the back like that, so you talk a little trash. But, wait! The evil new guy inadvertently shoots your girl in the face with a fire ball and she returns to your loving arms. Sound like the plots to this summer's biggest blockbusters? No. it's just professional wrestling at its absolute best. In the past month or so, pro wrestling has been just about everywhere. The hype for WrestleMania XV (The World Wrestling Federation's...

Never Been Kissedl Forget about it, please! [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 15 April 1999
Never Been Kissedl Forget about it, please! By Katie Galley wire services editor I recently went to see the movie Never Been Kissed, starring Drew Barrymore. You may be asking, do I recommend it? Well the answer is NO! Do not under any circumstances go see this movie. Unless of course you have an extra seven dollars in your pocket that you absolutely need to spend. And if that is the case, just give ME the seven dollars and stay home and watch old Miami Vice reruns on FX. In the movie Drew plays Josie, a 25 year old reporter for the Chicago Sun Times, whose first reporting job is to go undercover as a student in a local high school and find a hot story to report about. Now repeat after me, PREDICTABLE. Whatever you may be thinking about what will happen in this movie probably does. Josie was a geek in high school, a big one. All the kids called her "Josie Grossie." She never grew out of the geek frame of mind and has a very hard time shedding that persona. ...

The highs and lows of golf's Masters [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 15 April 1999
The highs and lows of golf's Masters Out of Bounds JASQN SNYDER Every sport today seems to have its time to shine. Whether it be football's Super Bowl, racing's Daytona 500 or golf's Masters, there is a sense of uniqueness and excitement whenever the event draws near. But for the athletes, there is opportunity: an opportunity to stand at the top of the sport's world, receive your applause, take your bow and take pride in the fact that all eyes are on you. Jose Maria Olazabal realized this dream for the second time in his career this past weekend by winning the Masters. Olazabal battled Davis Love III and Greg Norman in a three-man show to take golf's platform. All this after a very trying time in Olazabal's life. After winning the Masters in 1994, he hadn't finished any higher than 12th since. After a 14th place finish in 1995, he was diagnosed with a very painful foot injury, rheumatoid arthritis. This took Olazabal out of action with the fear of never walking again. Sund...
Running for the top spot; Ricky Williams makes dash for draft [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 15 April 1999
Running for the top spot; Ricky Williams makes dash for draft Down to the Wire... J By Randy Lange Knight-Ridder Newspapers Ricky Williams is almost too good to be true. Despite admitting last week that his six-cities-in-three-days, pre-draft "bridge-building" tour was taking its toll, the charismatic Texas running back began signing autographs from the moment he and his dreadlocks tumbled out of a white stretch limo at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Then, after meeting with new Eagles coach Andy Reid, Williams entered the Birds' locker room to talk to a crush of reporters. A makeshift podium was set up in the middle of the room to make it easier to videotape and hear him. "Aw, I don't want to stand up there," Williams said softly, backing up. "I don't feel comfortable. It's like being on a pedestal." Ricky knows pedestals. He won the Heisman Trophy and a showcase full of other awards, set or equaled 21 NCAA records - .heck, he was ...

Lions hit national stride Behrend men's track and field earn national ranking in inaugural season by Jason Snyder sports editor Inaugural seasons in sports arc supposed to be a celebration something new. The hype usually goes no further than the doors where the activity was started. Rarely does the word spread through the immediate area, and almost never does the sport get statewide recognition. But the Behrend men's track and field team has taken the meaning to a whole new level. The Lions have not only made noise statewide, but the whispers that began in Erie Hall in the past years, are now roars being heard across the nation. The Behrend men are currently ranked 27th in the country and are number one in the NCAA's Mid-East Region. This first-year team is the only team in Behrend's history to be ranked atop their respective NCAA Region. As if the early season success isn't enough, the Lions added to their power ranking this past meet at Wheeling Jesui...

Coach Jacobelli admits, "we have put lots of pressure on her at times, more pressure than anyone should ever have, but somehow she always exceeds our expectations." As far as Bodnor is concerned, she is very pleased with the season and the improvements the team has made this year. "The team is a great bunch of gals. We get along, have fun, and that's what matters....
