Foreclosure Advocated [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Foreclosure Advocated S ECRETARY Hoke Smith in a conference with the House Pacific Railroads Committee , recently , advocated the foreclosure of the government mortgage on the Pacific railroads and a resale of the roads . He declared that there would be no difficulty in doing this without government ownership of the roads , to which he was absolutely opposed . To our minds the forcing of these roads into the actual ownership and possession of the government is exactly what is needed and offers one chief reason why the foreclosure should proceed . The government could then demonstrate at what rate of expense these roads could be run , what the lowest freight and passenger rate might be and still pay a fair rate of interest on the investment . Above all the possibility of government management in the interest of the whole people and the whole country would be a matter of demonstration .

Our Bimetallic Platform [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Our Bimetallic Platform In the interest of every producer , and particularly the farmer , the FARM , FIELD AND FIRESIDE advocates the restoration of silver to its former place as a full legal tender and , equally with gold , a coin of ultimate redemption . This is the first step in the right settlement of the currency question and our national finances , and the first step toward the restoration of products to their normal prices and of consequent business prosperity .

Duties of a Secretary of Agriculture [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Duties of a Secretary of Agriculture S ENATOR VEST , of Missouri , in speaking in favor of the resolution requiring the Secretary of Agriculture to obey the laws in the distribution of seeds , paid his respects in sarcastic language to this great light of agriculture who came from Nebraska , parts his name in the middle , and has distinguished himself as a sycophantic follower of the President s goldbug policy . The distinguished Democratic Senator quoted from Cicero in characterising the gold plunges of the Secretary of Agriculture— the colossal intellect dealing with cabbages . When he hears of a silver lunatic he is like the war horse in Job—his neck is clothed with thunder . The Democratic party has been most unfortunate , not only as to its international discords , but also in the fact that the devil has owed ns a grudge and has paid it in a Secretary of Agriculture . The Secretary has put the democratic party in antagonism to the great agricultural interests of the country , a...

Called a Spade " a "Spade " [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Called a Spade a Spade S ENATOR TILLMANS speech on another page—a part having been published February 8—has been sneered at by the goldites and snobs in general . It calls a spade a spade without mincing matters or minding whose toes are trodden upon . The Senator does not claim to be a polished orator or even a smooth-tongued lawyer ; but a plain farmer , talking to plain men . He evidently believes that the demonitization of silver was a public wrong ; he believes that a conspiracy of the goldites controlled both nominations for President in 1892 . Naturally the leader , of both parties are woefully down on this bull in the political china shops . For our own part we would gladl y have every voter in the land read this arraignment of both the old parties . The Rothschild contract with the Secretary of the Treasury is shown up in all its glaring subjection to Jewish greed and British dictation . For want of space w . are compelled to omit the contract itself which is humiliating in...

Current Topics [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Current Topics Senator Knute Nelson declared in his able speech in the senate , concerning the demonetization of the silver dollar in 1 873 : I am not here to defend or justify , nor have I ever defended or justified the act of 1873 . In mv opinion it ought not to have passed . The national house has taken up the Pacific cable . The bill from the committee on commerce will soon be reported . It is proposed by the company to have the cable working to the Hawaiian Islands in eighteen months , and completed to Japan in three year s . The bill to be drafted will reduce this time . The subsidy asked for the Hawaiian cable is $ 180 , 000 a year for a term of twenty years , the government to have free use of the cable during that time . Some think that this is too large in view of the estimated cost of the work . $ 6 , 500 , 000 to $ 7 , 000 , 000 , and the probable amount of government business , which the committee estimated at from $ 20 , 000 to $ 30 , 000 . It is suggested also that su...

Jeilous of Coneress [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Jeilous of Coneress Strange to say the president and Secretary Olney object to the Armenian resolutions , so unanimously passed by both Houses of Congress . Olney says Congress ought not to interfere with diplomatic questions . The unanimity is one pervading our whole country . If the President wishes to make himself and his cabinet a storm center of popular indignation he will refuse or neglect faithfully and literally to carry out the instructions and suggestions of those resolutions . Have we a Lord Salisbury in the White House ?

A CALL has been made for a convention of farmers institute workers to be held at Watertown , Wisconsin , March 13 , 1896 , ln connection with the Wisconsin Tenth Annual Closing Institute . This was done at the suggestion of Secretary Leech of Manitoba , who thought it fitting to hold such a meeting in Wisconsin , as she was a pioneer in institute work . Garden and Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Garden and Orchard Distribution of Seeds IN a caustic speech before the United States Senate on the resolution in favor of the seed distribution , Senator Vest severely criticised the practice of furnishing costly flowers from government greenhouses for the receptions at the executive mansion , and added . Sir , I would rather give twice the amount of this appropriation to ; 1 enable some poor man in a distant country of the west who is fighting the hard battle of life , I would rather give him something that would make his cheerless home comfortable and bring light to his fireside ; I would rather put one flower in the siclj room of a noble working girl or matron than to have it snid that I had voted a hundred and odd thousand dollars for the flowers and exotics to go to the receptions and banquets of the officials of this government , where the chandelier flashes its light across the red wine and the air is fragrant with perfume like the spicy breeze of Araby the blessed . Secreta...

Farm Animals [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Farm Animals Profit in Beef Cattle The sale of 808 Beeves In England recently at a little more than 7 cents a pound , live weight , or very close to $ 100 per head , justifies Secretary Morton in saving that it will pay Americans to produce things that people abroad will buy . There Is always a demand for beef , and good stock will generally bring good prices . Beeves will nearly always sell at a profitable price , because fresh meat is one of the necessaries of life—certainly of healthful existence . Horses are now so cheap that It does Dot pay to raise them . The prices they command scarcely pay for the care and feed of a colt through three winters . Fat cattle always find a market . A butcher recently told me that if farmers would only realize it they could make money by raising first-class beeves . Every farm ought to produce from five to ten fat cattle each year . If we paid more attention to stock-raising and did not aim to crop so heavily , our farms would improve . We would ...
