% ^ m Little chicks should have a supply of clean , fine grit always before them . Don t feed the new-hatched chicks until they have been out of the shell at least thirty-six hours . Put the coop of the early brood in a sheltered place , where it will be protected from the winds . When the eggs are hatching reach under the sitting hen occasionally and remove the shells . If left in the nest they may cap an unhatched egg and kill the cluck within . Chicks of the heavier breeds , including Brahmas and Cochins , should be hatched not later than April ; medium weight breeds , such as Plymouth Rocks and Wyandottes , may profitably be hatched as late as May ; Leghorns are usually profitable when hatched as late as June ; but hatch all you can as early as you can , from now forward . Do not forget that fowls require a variety of food . Although wheat , corn , and oats , fed whole or cracked , or ground and fed in a mash , should furnish the base of the ration , other grains should be added...

DAIRY NOTES . It is the steady all year around returns from the dairy that makes the business profitable . Dont turn to pasture until the grass has some substance and has lost its washy character . The heifers that freshen at 27 and 28 months of age are usually more thrifty and return higher milk yields than those that freshen earlier in life . Dont tax breeding stock with the duties of maternity until they have a frame work and muscular growth sufficient for performing the duty . The cow that has the biggest appetite is sometimes like the man of the same capacity—not returning profitable returns for the feed consumed . Buy a Babcock test and weigh and test your milk or send a sample to the creamery . You can then find out whether your cows are boarders or whether they are returning a profit . A dairy cow that keeps up a steady flow of milk the year around is more profitable than the cow that gives large quantities the first three or four months and then dries off rapidly . As sprin...
