THE POULTRY YARD Poultry . . ; - .,---- What you getting out timber for ? goin i to building this spring ? . . I think of putting up a building for a hog-pen and hen-house , if 1 can get time before planting . : Shall build it ten ieet posts ; and use the lower floor for the pigs , and the upper part- for a hennery . What do you think ofthe plan ? Seems to me you re taking a good deal of pains for the hens . Mine stay in the barn . -. i , . . I dont like to have hens round all over the buildings , especially in the winter time , when they waste about as much hay as they are worth : And they want a warm place and good feed , with enough of lt , else it dont pay to keep em . Does it pay anyhow ? Yes . I have proved to my satisfaction that It pays well to keep a small lot , say twenty-five , for the eggs they produce . With eggs at a quarter of a dollar a dozen , as they have been the past year . It don t take a great while for that number of hens to bring in a ten-dollar greenback . I...

AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 25 July 1868

AGRICULTURAL Application of Chemistry to Agriculture- . - so . n . Potash Is well known in an impure state by the name of pearl-ash . When pure , it is quite white , has a burning taste and when exposed to the air becomes quite moist , and at last turns into a liquid , owing , to the water absorbed . Soda is a substance very similar to potash in appearance and properties . Its taste , however , is less burning , and unless when perfectly pure and caustic , it does not become moist in the air . In the so-called kelp this substance exists in considerable quantity . It forms one of the two component parts of common salt . These two substances—potash and soda , together with the ammonia mentioned before , are known by the name of alkalies . Lime is familiar to , every farmer . Chalk Is a compound of carbonic acid and lime . When this compound —carbonate of lime—Is subjected to a high temperature , it loses about half its weight , which is caused by the driving off of the carbonic acid ....

AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 25 July 1868

AGRICULTURAL Selections and Condensations , Miloh Cows and Their Treatment . That pure-bred Alderney , Durham , Dutch or other breeds make the only good cows we have , for family or other dairy purposes , is not a fact , they , like all other stock , varying , and to as great an extent . While I believe in and admire pure-bred , excellent and handsome stock , both oxen and cows , yet I cannot be Insensible to the merits of those of less distinguished lineage . Onr natives and grades make as good dairy and family cows as the average of pure-bred , so far as I am posted ; to be sure , tbey are not all gool dairy stock , neither do I find that to be case with any other breed ; very true , some families of foreign blood cows give 19 excellent family and dairy cows . With the same care and selection in breeding , etc ., of common cows , breeding only . males and females of the most desirable dairy qualities , we can have those of as even sure qualities as any other breed , yet , where im...

Answers given to inquiries without charge . If to be answered by letter , 12 . 00 must be enclosed at the professional fee . Do Bote Kill Horses ? •- Our attention was lately called by a correspondent to an article in the Utica Herald on the above subject , In which credit is given to a certain Dr . Stewart for having discovered that the public have been misled on this subject . Perhaps the writer in that journal may next announce that some one has just discovered the law of gravitation and then proceed to enlarge on the great addition which the discoverer has made to human knowledge . How easy it is to acquire the reputation of the discoverer when we only discover old facts . What a reputation a man might make by discocering the circulation of the blood if his cotemporaries were ignorant enough not to know that ...

HORTICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 25 July 1868

HORTICULTURAL The Flower Garden in July . . Every owner of a flower garden should examine his collection frequently , not only for the purpose of eradicating weeds and keeping the plants In fine health and vigor by stirring the . soil , mulching , watering , etc ., but also tor ascertaining w ?> at plants are needed . Overhanging shade is very injurious to plants of everykind * but especially to flowers , and it is easy to see the efforts they-make to avoid it , by inclining to that side which has - plenty of air and lightAs the early flowers of Spring and Summer fade , the flower garden will become dnll and cheerless , if there Is not a good collection of late Summer and Fall flowers to keep up the beauty of the scene . The early flower bulbs have long since faded , and given place to the herbaceous perennials , and many of these , too , are now in the sear and yellow leaf . The peonies , for instance , which a month ago were arrayed in robes surpassing those of Solomon ...

mmwiw mmmu [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 25 July 1868

mmwiw mmmu Baited by m . PMetteal HooMkeapor Cooking Stoves . There was once a celebrated physician who gave out that after bis death there would be sold to the highest bidder for the benefit of his family , a volume containing the result of his long experience and observations . Of course , when the coveted volnme was offered there were many . sons of Esculapius eager to grasp the prize . When the lucky bidder laid his hand upon the volume , he hastened home , locked himself in his sanctum , and with intense interest began to turn over its pages ; but strange to say , he turned over blank after . blank till somewhere near the middle of the book he found one sentence ; keep the head cool , and the feet warm and dry . Now , not saying bnt the constitution may have other difficulties to contend with besides cold and wet feet , and a hot head , I have ho doubt but these two are the most formidable enemies the constitution has to contend with ; and these enemies of human health are brou...
