Miscellaneous The Matter With Kansas ( Continued from page 9 . ) maturity last fall the broker warned him that it would not be renewed and he began to look about for means to pay the debt , He sold some calves to one man and some hogs to another , and both these men borrowed the money with which they paid for the stock . Queries and Answers [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 25 June 1898

Queries and Answers Can you tell me what is the matter with my old sows ? They get lame in their front legs and get down on their knees to walk . One has died and another is getting lame . -A Reader . Shelby , Mo . You do not state whether the stream in question was navigable and whether the lumber company was operating under license . Assuming that yourself , in constructing the bridge , and the lumber company in floating its logs , were not acting under authoritative license , the lumber company could only be made to respond in damages where its act which destroyed the bridge was a gross and willful one , I would like to ask you a question . If wc build a bridge which we must cross to go to town and a lumber company up the river lets its logs destroy it and we build another , can we compel them to pay for it ? C . N . Ontonagon , Mich , It is probably from indigestion from long continuation of one kind of food , such as corn . Feed for a change crushed oats and bran in equal parts...

Weather and Crops [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 25 June 1898

Weather and Crops With generally favorable temperature conditions and abundant rains over the greater part of the country east of the Rocky mountains , more particularly the central and southern sections , crops have made substantial progress during the week ending June 20 . Corn has continued to make good growth , , and the general condition of the crop is promising , although suffering from lack of cultivation in some of the principal corn states of the central valleys and in northern Texas . Harvesting is now in progress in the southern portions of Illinois , Indiana and Ohio where the conditions have been favorable . In Kansas , Missouri , southern Illinois , Arkansas and Tennessee more or less damage is reported by rust , while in Arkansas and Tennessee grain in stock has been damaged . The Week [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 2 July 1898

The Week The determination of the administration to make a naval raid upon Spain is the theme of the hour . Never have our country s guns been turned against a European state , and the movement outlined in the president s order issued last Monday marks an epoch in our national history . That order was that Commodore John Crittenden Watson , until last week commanding the North Cuban blockading squadron , should at once organize a squadron and proceed to Spain and attack the coast cities of the peninsula . Camara s departure for Manila has left the coast of Spain entirely unprotected , save for the old fortifications , which will not long withstand the assaults of our great guns , and it is believed that such a raid will more quickly than anything else bring the war to an end . Although the president has had this plan in contemplation for some time , the slaughter of the . rough riders at La Quasina last Friday was all that was needed to decide its undertaking . He became convinced t...

The Power of Association [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 2 July 1898

The Power of Association A paper was recently read before the twentyseventh annual meeting of the Kansas board of agriculture , giving a number of reasons why the farmers of that state should keep sheep . The various forms of income and their value to the land were instanced , but a reason not usually urged was the influence of sheep culture upon the character of the shepherd . Sheep , said the writer , are the gentlest , the most cleanly ; they will not soil their feet if they can avoid it , much less track dirt into their houses . Their sweetness of disposition , modesty , pliable docility , patience , evenness of temper and a contentment with whatever may be their , lot must , just as surely as the dripping of the water wears the rock , have a potent influence over their master . This may be an entirely new attribute of the sheep ; but I am fully persuaded that the man who tends his flocks , and follows them for many years , unless wholly depraved , becomes a gentler , kinder and...

Agriculture and the Nation [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 2 July 1898

Agriculture and the Nation The position occupied by agriculture in the nation s industrial and commercial life—all that makes for the material prosperity of this people—is one which cannot be too strongly urged in an age rather given to discrediting rural life , and which seeks to magnify the attractiveness of the more sensational urban living . What that position is never has been more clearly indicated than is shown In the figures of our exports during the fiscal year which ended , on Thursday of this week . While the June figures are not yet available , by using these of 1897 we can approximate quite closely to the real amount . Thus assuming , the total value of exports for the year is found to be $ 1 , 213 , 000 , 000 , or an increase of $ 162 ,- 000 , 000 over the year preceding , and an excess over imports for this year of something like $ 600 , 000 , 000 , the latter amount representing the balance of trade in our favor . Of this great volume of exports available figures ind...

The World-Wide Brotherhood [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 2 July 1898

The World-Wide Brotherhood We quote from a letter from a Minnesota friend to the editor the following , for it contains a thought which commands universal consideration and gives to the world new hope and courage : How small this world is after all ! How much we think like other men in other parts of the world , and seem to be actuated by the same thought and spirit at the same time . . Here I was , stewing for the past month because all around me there seemed a spirit of imperialism , aggrandizement , conquest , that grew from one day to another . Otherwise sensible men seemed to be affected by it—a perfect wave that I thought could not be stemmed . This week it is not so rampant , good Republicans are not so jingoey , the poor Democrat has a chance to say a word without being taunted a traitor , etc . And now I get up from reading The Voice and find the same things had been going through your mind ; that in Chicago people were moved by the . same wave as in Duluth , and at the sam...
