^»^ . __ ¦ TCAXOBB FABXEBW CX . 17 B . Meeting- or Xar . BUi . SUBJECT —The construction of Bams . Moses Dean said : I came with no expectation of speaking npon this subject and indeed did not know what the subject was , but will give my idea of what kind of a tarn is best adapted to the requirements of our ordinary farms I have owned sixteen barns in my life time , and hare built eight of them in this County . Our average farms are about 200 acres in extent ; such a farm requires a barn about 32 x 48 . I would build such a barn with a basement even if I built it on level ground . The foundation alone will cost half as much a basement , consequently the extra expense bears no comparison to the advantage . Where the ground has a slope of one foot fall to the rod it is very favorable to the basement barn I would build three sides of the basement of solid stone wall ; on the fourth side which should front the barn yard I would have stone piers . I would run the stantions cross ways of ...

A GRIZZLY «« EAR HUNT . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 9 March 1870

A GRIZZLY «« EAR HUNT . sandstone , sometimes an acre in extent , which compose the roof ; and between them are deep , perpendicular canons with ledges , and it was in such a one we found onr quarry at last Wo were walking down among the small trees , we on one side and fieed on the other , out of our sight momentarily , when we saw a very large meal-nose . He was sitting bolt upright on his bnttock , perfectly motionless , bnt not looking toward us . To speak with strict literalness , ho was evidently meditating on his latter end . He scented ns , for he kept sniffing the air , and presently he gave one nostril a quick brash with one paw , and the other with the other . He was an immense fellow , standing np over seven feet high . Tommy knelt down and cocked his piece . Ah , he whispered , he is a big , dirty hnmbug , and Ill drill a hole in his pocket , if I dont see Molly any more . Not , and thou lovest me ; Tommy . COAL OIL . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 9 March 1870

COAL OIL . Condition ! of Explosions—Fire Test—- ¦ X r . l t Jn ttk *** »• Dstiisrcjr-Hlgla Test -A corres pondent of the St Louis Republican , who ia evidently posted ftnly in the matter of coal-oils , gives valuable information for every person who has occasion to buy reined petroleum and its products for illuminating purposes . We copy the most interesting portion of his communication . Everything made from petroleum is mentioned in this market as coal oil , though the term is little used in other markets , and hence coal oil is saddled with the blame of every accident or flre that occurs , whether from refined oil , or its refuse , naptha and gasoline . Tour article falls into the common error of attributing to coal oil what is true only of naptha or gasoline . In refining crude petroleum a volatile , fiery element is run off in the form of a vapor , and condensed into a liqnid . The refined oil remaining is thereby given a fire-test . The lightest in det sity of this volatile l...
