The rain of Saturday night only produced a four-foot rise in the Brazos. Sevebal births have occurred in the city recently, which will help to swell ike census returns." Tub boys about town have their eye on a certain young man who spends his Sundays in Hempstead. Mattie Allen, the colored girl who was stabbed in the back at Camptown on Friday night, is still improving and will recover. A colored woman was brought in Monday from Burton by Constable Cunningham and was lodged in the county jail to lay out a fine for dis turbing the peace. Several old soldiers of Green's brigade will go down to Hempstead on the 27th to attend the reunion of Hood's brigade. The Brenham gun club will also be on hand. 1 I FARM AND HOME. MOW THE IKISII PLANT POTATOES When tho pressnt writer was a boy his father hired an irishman iresh irom tho old country to work on tho iarm. Ho know nothing ot our system of agriculture, but was bright, anxious to learn, and when the field was furrowed for planting potatoes, and ho learnt that the plants were to occupy tho furrows he wanted to know what was to bo planted between tho rows. It scorned to him like a great waste of ground, and wanted to plant a patch as thoy did in tho old coun try. Permission was given and ho selected a half acroof rather moist, nearly level ground, free from stones, tho loam of tho surface be ing well mixed with sand that had gradually washed down from higher ground, and the subsoil was a white sand.
