Bearing this fact i...

ATI AMERICA.* WIGWAM AT VIEN NA. Bayard Taylor'* Letters to the N. T. Tribune. I foil in with a friend who knew the way to the American Wigwam, a fea turo of which I had already heard tho Ao9trians speak with great interest. The way led through a bit of the old Prater forest, which baa boen left standing on the eastern side of the south Portal. Wofirstcame upon a Styrian farm-house—just such a struc ture aa yon will Me anywhere in theoonld green ?alleys beyond the Semmaring Alp. The shingled roof pitches nearly to the ground on both sides: the front, adorned with plain wood-oarvinga, pro* jeots a little over the base, and the whole expression of the building, like that of a hen oovering her ohickens, is suggestive of warmth and shelter. Styrian women, in light boddiecs, accost ed us in the soft, friendly dialect of the province, and a gorgeous landlord, in gray knee-breeches and green gaiters over enormous calves, superintended the festive scene. The long table in side ware crowded ...

I A S From an interesting letter io the St. Paul /V«f9| from the pen of its editor, Mr. Wheelock, desotlbine recent trip through Texas, we make the following oxtraot: The wheat—winter wheat of course —was already headed out in all this seotion on May 19th, though the sea* son was very late. I noticed that the straw was very short, hardly more than fifteen or eighteen inches high, and thai the head was also dwarfed by the same cause, doubtless the want of rain in the Fall and Winter. The oorn was not more than fifteen inches high, ex* oept a few fields south of Dallas, where it had almost matured, the corn being in the "silky ear," on stalks four or five feet high. It seemed somewhat singu lar that in a soil so evidently stored with all the elements of exuberant fer tility under the stimulating host of a semltropioal sun,and whioh they tell us produces a bale of cotton to the aore and corresponding results through the whole range of cereals, the display of vegetation should be on so ...

OOOli WATJfiK *'o HARVEST One of the great discomforts of the harvest Co d, where ioe is not used, is the mawkish warmth which the drink* iog water acquires, after being oarriod out to the field. This may be easily obviated however and a oool draught always be had. When the water is carried in large jugs, all that is neces sary is to envelop thorn in several folds of coarse cotton or linen cloths, kept constantly wot* The evaporation of the moisture in the cloths, keeps the •easel perfeotly oool, and just in pro portion as the evaporation be fast or slow. Thus the evaporation of ether or other exceedingly volatile substance in a draught 19 sometimes employed an experiment to freeze substaneea in the hottest weather. And the experiment may be made, in a degree, by succes sively wetting the finger and holding it up in the breeze. If the harvest force be large and a barrel be used, it should bo more thick ly enveloped with cloths, and what ever vessel be used it should be care fully sh...
