Any one travelling through Doniphan County, cannot bat hare noticed farms hero and there, in every direction, with the houses deserted, fences goiag to de struction, .and everything aba at them wearing a desolata and dreary aipect. The owners 'of a large majority of these farms are off in the army, or sleeping upon the field of battle. In the Bummer of 1862, Gen. Lane, with hit recruiting commission, obtained to-strengthen his power, came to our Coanty calling for volunteers. He pledged his word that the regiments were to be raised for home protection, and wotld not be taken from the State ; and that they should be dis charged in time to return home, aid put in crops, the following Spring. Upon the atrength of these promises, old men, young men, and boys enlisted, leaving their crops nngathered, and their farms nntended. The regiments were filled, and...
