"While it i3 true that good shelter will are a large amount of food that stock .vould be compelled otherwise to con- tame to save life, jet it will not do to 1 urnish only shelter, they must have food besides. But if we wish to save one half or one-third of the food that tfould be required to feed them in a cer tain condition, we can do so by provid ing shelter. That ia to say, an animal exposed to the cold, storms,' winds, and weather, and compelled to sleep on the cld, frozen or wet ground, will require at least one third more food to keep it in good condition, than it would require to keep it in the same condition if in a warm, dry shed or stable, tvhere no such exposure- was experienced. USEFUL KNOWLEDGE, QuiokiiIste , may be used to absorb moisture and. putrid fluids. Sprinkle it freely in powdered form in all places to be purified. - ' Black oxide manganese may be used for purifying cellars and rooms, without discommoding patients. It may be made ot forty parts black oxide of man ganese and sixty parts of common salt, and may bo distributed on plates. In any apartment capable of being closed, which ias been infected by dis charges or emanations from the sick, after thorough cleansing and white washing, a fumigation by burning a few ounces of sulphur, or by nitrous acid from two or three ounces of nitric acid poured upon an ounce of copper tilings, will be effectual in disinfecting them. Or the rooms may be disinfected with bromine. Before the fumigation all chimneys and openings should be closed and remain so for twenty-four hours. USEFUL KNOWLEDGE. The durability of chestnut, under favorable circumstances, is shown by a recent examination of the roof of West minister Abbey, which -was built of that material nearly five hundred yenrs ago, and is still perfectly sound. France has 123,000 manufacturing establiHhments, employing nearly two million workmen, and turning out annu ally, according to the French census, products to the amount of ten thousand millions of francs, of about $2,000,000, 000. Onb of the most painful surgical operations is removing nails which have grown into the flesh. There is no ne cessity whatever for this pain. The new method is to keep the patient ten or fifteen days in a bed or on a sofa, with a bread or meal poultice applied to the toe. This poultice is changed several times daily, and tne too is bathed twice a day in water as warm as may be borne. In ten or fifteen " ays the nail becomes so soft it may be cut with scissors and removed by hand without,the least pain. To Cure Lock-jaw....
