©vetting £tate Journal, SATURDAY EVENING, FEB. 10, 1872. FREE DISCUSSION. To the Editor of the Slate Journal. Last winter Mrs. Lee made an attempt to get Congress to remove the graves of tho nation's dead at Arlington and restore to hoi* the estate which she claims as her own. The storm of indignation with which the claim was met throughout the whole coontry, assured her that her action in that direction would be fruitless. She i.s now more modest. This winter sho only asks payment, for the place in the snug little sum of $300,000. She ought to accompany this matter with another little claim on account of the laceration of her feelings bocause the United States had the temerity to squelch tho great Confederacy. A Washton telegram in the Baltimore Sun concerning this claim closes with tho following sentence: As thin property was a part of the original estate of Mrs. Lee, the animosity borne towards her husband for his prominent participation in the rebellion Is not expected to prejud...

(gpftttofl JPtaft founutiL THURSDAY EVENING, FEB. 15, 1872. [For the Stat* Journal. Ii 1 ill MM IM I > OF RANDOLPH. John Randolph, of Virginia, though a very able statesman, was, beyond question, the most eccentric character of his times. When he was not quite twentyfive years of age, he was elected to Congress. His appearance at the time was that of a more youth. When ho was about to take the oath of office, the speaker, doubtful as to his age, said: "Mr. Randolph, art £v of such age as lo meet the requiremts of the constitution?" (which was twenty-five) to which Randolph replied: "You must ask my constituents, sir!" Randolph possessed a heart as warm and genial as a summer's sun and a gift of sarr sharper than any two-edged sword, following incident forcibly illustrates both these characteristics: On one occasion a company of politicians were assembled, among whom, were Randolph and some personal admirers of Henry Clay. In tho course of conversation one of the number re...
