PAGE 10 MOUNTAIN LAUREL FEBRUARY, 1987 While I was born and raised on Blue Moon Creek, I left the comforting shelter of its singing waters and surrounding hills to follow my father and his dream of a life away from the poverty of subsistence farming. There will always be a special place in my heart for the hard-working, sometimes odd, sometimes unbelievable, folk in that backwoods retreat. As a result, I go back every chance I get, and, when I do, I always stop in to see Grinning Henry Banks. Grinning Henry (so named because of his sunny disposition and to differentiate him from all the other Henry Banks') has been an old man all my life. The most senior of citizens on Blue Moon Creek, that naturally makes him the unofficial, official local historian. This is not to say that Henry has ever written anything down. Local gossip has it that Henry can't even write. But, he is a historian nonetheless, in the tradition of the African griots who can recite the history of families and commun...

COON HUNTING Continued From Page 10. "Now, this weren't purely by accident. I'd purposefully started them dogs out where they'd pick up the scent of an old he-coon name of Moses that lived t'other side of the ridge. And, I knew that them dogs would carry 'em right through the middle of Rich's still. Them three boys that cornered 'em was Butch Buncombe's boys. Rich was paying them to tend his still that year." "Rich being the charmer he was, offered Teddy a seat. But, Teddy wasn't having none of this. 'Sirs, I demand you release us this minute!' he yelled. Elwood was mopping the sweat off his face and he ran up next to Teddy. 'Mr. President,' he said, 'This man's a moonshinerl He'll not hesitate to kill us!' Teddy turned a cold stare on Elwood. 'Rubbish!' he said, 'Are you a coward, Sir?' And when Elwood didn't make a peep, Teddy had his answer." "Now, Rich pulled a chair up to the fire and grabbed a jug up off the ground. 'Mr. President, I'd be pleased if you'd join me in a snort. T...

PAGE 12 THE MOUNTAIN LAUREL FEBRUARY, 1987 The Mail Box Dear Mountain Laurel, When I was a child I remember a paper that was published called "The Yellow Jacket." In one issue there was a poem about one pair of overalls that was handed down from one brother to another. I wonder if you have seen this poem. I would like to see and read it again. If you can find it please print it in THE MOUNTAIN LAUREL. I really enjoy your paper, I always read it from cover to cover. Thank You, Mrs. H. Spraker Hillsville, Virginia 24343 Dear Mrs. Spraker, We haven't heard of the poem you mentioned in your letter but maybe one of our readers my know where this poem maybe found. Good Luck! Susan Thigpen, Editor Dear Mountain Laurel, I got your November 'B6 issue at the Chattanooga AAA office and enjoyed it. THE BLUE RIDGE DIGEST FEBRUARY, 1987 This month there are four (4) full pages of maps in the Blue Ridge Digest. We have expanded the space devoted to maps in order to be fair to our advertisers who were located in areas not shown on our old maps and to provide our readers with a better Blue Ridge travel aid. The new maps are lettered and numbered by block. The attractions and services listed in the Blue Ridge Digest are also now listed in lettered-numbered sections that correspond to the map. In order to locate the services available within a specific area simply determine the block number of the area you're interested in by using the numbers on the left side of the map and the letters across the top of each map. After determining the block reference (example: H-ll includes the area around Meadows of Dan, Virginia) check the Blue Ridge Digest listings beginning on page BRD2 for the services available in that area. Each of the blocks encompass an area Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway ...
