Mgalnc Iht Const It ut lun I [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 22 November 1849

Mgalnc Iht Const It ut lun I The thirteenth dii of October, in ibe year 181), wm one of those eventful epoch* in the history of California which will ever be a day of remembrance and interest— the beginning of a new era! It was a day of beauty and sunshine. The sun rose iu all his might, and as he went higher and higher in the heavens the ocean mist that hung lastly upon the pleasant town of Monterey, and seemed dallying softly with the placid waters of the lovely bay, gradually shrunk from his amorous embrace, until it had rolled up the hill-sides, and died away, leaving its last kiss upon the crests of the stately pines. And as the day grew brighter and hotter, a balmy breeie swept gently past—so gentle that it did not ripple the quiet water#—so cool that it seemed to soothe and calm all unworthy and rent less desires —and yet so potent that it filled the mind with great thoughts that appeared to have been called into being by the softened booming of the mighty breakers of the Pac...

i ELECTION RETURNS. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 22 November 1849

i ELECTION RETURNS. ' The returns of the Brat general election for the State ; 1 «f California come in very slowly. The vote throughont 1 ihe State hus been very meagre ; a fait to lie accounted br in part by the rains which occurred just before an<l ou * the day of election. It is a matter of deep regret that the vote should have Veen so small, as it was confidently looked to as an cx|hi- " nent of the population of the country. In this view the 1 Tailure of the voters to come out is likely to do injustice 1 to an important and really great State. From present ! 0 appearances the total vote will not exceed 15.«NM> — a num- " ber that certainly does not comprise more than ont-thiril ? if the voters in the commonwealth. t We subjoin a recapitulation of the vote on the Consti- - ;ution, for governor, lieutenant governor, ami congress, * made up from the best information we can procure, viz ; 1 HKCAPITLXATION. • oil e o a 8 * p/ i. § s: ifi « 2 £ a 4 i u. g ~ S2§g...

Hsadwlcli Klatids. i By the schr. James K. Whiting, Capt. J. T. Hall, which arrived this morning after a passage of sixteen days from Lahaina, we have late dates from the Sandwich Islands. We are indebted to our old friend JAMES C. LEIGHTON, Esq., for a copy of the Polynesian of Oct. 27. There is no news of importance, the Polynesian being still filled with the "Dillon statements." The Whiting, it is gratifying to know, has a large cargo of fruits and vegetables.

[I'or the Alta California.] Than Unliving Day. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 22 November 1849

[For the Alta California.] Thanksgiving Day. We welcome it to California ! the first ever appointed on the shores of the Pacific ! It reminds us of home and of the scenes of childhood. We cannot this year gather round those ancient fire-sides and festal hoards that have welcomed us always before ; but we can observe Thankgiving in our new home, and we rejoice that the Governor has issued a proclamation appointing the day. And we have abundant reason for thanksgiving. Then, in that assembly of pilgrims were the day was first voted, many desired the appointment of a public fast. A farmer -- a plain man -- rose and remarked, that the inconveniences they suffered, and concerning which they had so often wearied Heaven with their complaints. were not so great as might have been expected : that the earth began to reward their labor and to furnish liberally for their sustenance ; that the seas and rivers were full of fish ; that the air was sweet and the climate wholesome, and, above all. t...
