April 1 Day for national head count nears [Newspaper Article] — Belvedere Citizen / Eastside Journal — 19 March 1980

April 1 Day for national head count nears For the 20th time, the United States will be staging a national head count as the 1980 census gets underway with the mailing of forms to individual households on March 28. The forms are to be returned on “Census Day,” April 1, and followup visits will be staged by Census Bureau employees on any forms not mailed back. Census Bureau spokespeople expect the 1980 count to show a national population of around 222 million, up 9 percent since 1970, one of the two lowest increases since the first national count in 1790. The Bureau is still recruiting area residents in East Los Angeles and northeast area for some 500 jobs which will last some one to two months. Need for personnel is so critical that the number of testing centers has been expanded. __ TESTS Tests are offered at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the East Los Angeles Neighborhood Facility, 133 N. Snyder denies he misused coast job [Newspaper Article] — Belvedere Citizen / Eastside Journal — 19 March 1980

Snyder denies he misused coast job Councilman Art Snyder lias denied published reports that he has been using his position on the South Coast Regional Coastal Commission as a means of raising funds for his expected campaign for mayor. An investigative report stated that Snyder, commission chairman Donald E. Wilson and commissioner Elerth S. Erickson have raised some $200,000 during the last two years from people who came before them, and in some cases collected the contributions within days or weeks of a favorble vote. A Snyder aide said the councilman’s response to this was essentially the same as to previous charges of possible influence peddling made against him when he was chairman of the planning cmmittee; that his fund raising solicitations are made by his campaign committee off a list they compile, and that he is frequently not aware of who has and has not contributed, and is not influenced by contributions. PATTERN In regard to the planning committee, Snyder maintained that ...

Pledge city funds for justice center [Newspaper Article] — Belvedere Citizen / Eastside Journal — 19 March 1980

Pledge city funds for justice center Mayor Tom Bradley has made the first commitment of city funds toward development of a juvenile justice center in the northeast area, an aide told Northeast Newspapers this week. Art Gastelum, a mayoral assistant who is on the task force studying the justice center, said the Mayor has pledged to put in the upcoming budget part of the $170,000 which has been estimated as the costs of converting the Eastlake Juvenile Hall into a justice center. Gastelum said the $170,000 may be an overestimate for the costs, and at any rate the mayor will be expecting the county to also pay part of the conversion cost. The mayoral aide said the city has no present intentions to pay any of the ongoing costs of operating the center, since the justice system is under the direction and control of the county. Supervisor Ed Edleman has also endorsed the justice center concept, and recently told the Highland Park Coordinating Council that he was asking for $606,000 in the ...
