liui Popnlntlnn. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 8 March 1850
liui Popnlnt lnn. The community of San Francisco ii a perfect olla podrida, although its principal ingredient and general character is American. The Americans are the onions and flavor and season the whole dish. Let any one place himself in any one spot for half an hour and ho will see as many castes as wore over droamod of in his philosophy — casts of humanity in clay by a great master, not the counterfeit presentment in plaster of Paris wrought by human hands. And yet there is no clashing no interference, no national, sectional feelings engendered, and ■ better regulated community never existed. Here you will find the Now York merchant, tho Southern planter, the Western farmer and the Eastern trader. The slave-holder and the hot-headed abolitionist. Here is the volatile, enthusiastic, sanguine Frenchman, who can smile without a sous in his pocket, chaunt the Marseilles, or mourn pour la patrie and shout vive la liberte, egalite et fratermte' over his pct.te verre duvin Bordeaux. Three or four vessels are advertised for "Trinidad Hay and the new gold diggings"' to sail during the present month — the first will leave in a few days. The price of passage for each man and a small amount of baggage is six...

LOCAL MATTERS. Theatrical. -Mia. Kirby, who has been playing at the Olympic for the past few weeks, takes a benefit to-mor-row evening on which occasion she will present a pleasingly diversified bill, has labored under many disadvantages during her engagement and has had no opportunity of playing any of her favorite characters, owing to many conflicting causes. In those characters in which she has appeared -lie hai made a very favorable impression and won nightly upon her admirers. We hope that she may have a full house to-morrow, and that she will be permanently connected with the company, as additional female talent i? much NnUreA. The extremely unpleasant woathor last evening operated very unfavorably to Mrs. Kowe, who took a benefit. She is a very estimable lady, a graceful equestrian and a great favorite with the public, and we kopo her name will again be presented when the elements are a little less inclined to throw cold water upon a fair beneficiary.
