Gough left last Monday, August 26, for points along the Panhandle Short Line Railroad, meeting the citizens in mass at the various towns and ex- plaining the change 'that has been ms^le ip the management of the road*. They visited Big Springs and Stanton on the Texas and Pacific, these two towns being com- petitors for the new road. Subscription Price $1.00 per Year strictly in advance FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1907 Once upon a time, a monkey and a cat were roasting chesnuts in the hot ashes. When the chesnuts were ready to eat, the monkey pursuaded the cat to let him use her paw to draw out the chesnuts. It was kind of the cat but hard on her paws. Just so with a newspaper. Often a class of citizens, or the city conncil, or some officer needs to be roasted. The well meaning citizen acting the part of the monkey wants to use the newspaper not only to furnish the hot ashes, but to draw out the ches- nuts as well. Often the Brand is asked to roast so and so, of course, calling no cames. "Give the coun- cil, thunder/' says ...

In smaller towns the churches are pressed into use, but in places as large as Hereford, the churches no longer serve the purposes. They should be used for religious exercises only and not dese* crated by other and foreign features. Of course an auditorium that would seat 1000 people will cost a bit of money, but there could be no invest- ment that would bring surer returns to the town as a town than a well- appointed place where all public meetings could be held.
