12 - Section A - THE SACHSE NEWS - Thursday March 23.2006 mmm mm City audit calls for change in Wylie EDC accounting practices By Patty Montagno An audit report released last week questioned some of the accounting practices of the Wylie Economic Development Corporation. The report was presented at last week's city council meeting by auditor Lewis Crain of Rutledge Crain and Company, PC. In his summary letter, Crain said the WEDC is a "discretely presented component unit" in the city's com- bined financial statements. The WED is financed with a voter-approved half-cent city sales tax. Its purpose is to aid, promote and further the economic develop- ment within the city. According to the report, the WEDC is a government-fund type with a Sept. 30 fiscal year end. The audit identified several "reportable conditions that we believe to be material weaknesses" in the WEDC's accounting proeee- dures, Crain said. "A material weakness is a reportable condition in which the design or operation...

THE SACHSE NEWS Shining on the community, events and people of Sachse Publisher Chad B. Engbrock Managing Editor Donnita Nesbit Fisher COLUMN Shopping trip make-over Judy Truesdell Mecca Some of y'all may remember when I shared with you about Beebee, my alter ego who was in the habit of pop- ping out at foot- ball games and yelling vicious, inflammatory things at members of opposing teams. Although she is quiet most of the time, she will occasionally take over and get me in trouble. I believe her to be, to fiote the song "Polk Salad Annie," wretched, spiteful, straight-razor- tonn' woman. (Maybe that song should be entitled "Polk Salad Beebee.") She showed up again recently in a Target. I had business in the fine city of Rockwall and was availing myself of some shopping at the Target on Horizon at 1-30. I was pushing my cart down a narrow aisle and acci- dentally bumped into another woman's cart. "Excuse me," I said, moving oul of the way. "Oh no, excuse me," she responded. "Skinny ...

* Wm*.-Wylie Boys Soccer Pirates clinch playoff berth; Mount Pleasant likely first-round foe Wylie scores 13 goals in last two contests By Greg Ford Wylie's mission, at least from the outside, may not have appeared that daunting. If they beat West Mesquite and Forney, two of the weaker teams in District 14-4A, then the Pirates would finish 9-5 and earn a spot in the state playoffs. They did what they were sup- posed to, dropping the Wranglers 5- 1 March 14, and then gliding through the Jackrabbits 8-0 in the home finale on Friday. Now, Wylie, which has endured a topsy-turvy district run, can focus on winning the necessary games to claim the Class 4A crown. That quest starts this weekend, most likely against Mount Pleasant at a site to be determined. "Even in the games we've lost to Highland Park and Greenville (each of whom swept the Pirates), we've been dominate for 40 to 80 minutes at a time," head coach George Velten said. "If we can piece those games together, and score some goa...

Though sometimes the seasons can he diffi- cult to determine from day to day, this winter was a mild one and the huds on trees are beginning to appear and signs of spring are evident. One time-honored tradition of spring, other than hay fever, is the annual ordeal of spring cleaning. VjT 1 Spring clean- ing comes at a time when many begin to bring out warm weather clothes, preparing winter cloth- ing for storage and when gardening tasks begin to demand time and attention. Other than dusting off the cob- webs accumulated during winter's hibernation, the act of spring clean- ing can be of assistance to those who suffer from seasonal allergies, according to experts.
